General Statement of Duties:
Hiring bus drivers for the 2020-2021 school year school year! Safely transport students from home or bus stops, to school and from school back home or to the bus stops; also, transport students on field trips and any other activity requiring the utilization of a school bus. Full-time and substitute positions available. Substitute bus drivers fill-in for full-time drivers on as-needed basis and can potentially move to full-time positions, if available and if performance standards are met.

Essential Duties:
  • Conducts proper pre-trip inspection of school bus to be driven on route/trip
  • Operates school bus in a safe manner
  • Enforces safety rules
  • Reasonable disciplinary functions applied with fairness and consistency
  • Provides good rapport with schools serviced and Pupil Transportation Department
  • Good personal hygiene and conduct
  • Attends work daily and be engaged in job responsibilities
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs. or more
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Obtains and maintains Commercial Driver's License with proper endorsements.
  • Successfully completes State of Virginia , Department of Education Certification Course to drive a School Bus.
  • Knowledge of operation and function of a school bus and governing laws.
  • Ability to read and properly complete forms required by Pupil Transportation office.
  • Ability to deal effectively with children and adults.
  • Have good driving record, good health and be drug-free.
  • Must be at least 21 years old.


Additional Information:
Full-time Bus Driver salary - $14.61 per hour (up to $15.31 with school experience) - 6 hour/183-day position with benefits - open untill filled

Substitute Bus Driver salary - $13.91 per hour - 29 hours per week maximum - no benefits

Section 5 - School Bus
Section 6 - Transporting Cargo
Section 8 - Transporting Passengers
Sections 3, 4, 7 and 9 should be reviewed due to questions that may appear within the General Knowledge test.
When prepared, you must go to the Division of Motor Vehicles to take the following written tests to obtain the Commercial Driver's License Instructional Permit:
1. General Knowledge
2. Air Brake
3. Transporting Passengers
4 . School Bus
