    Job Title: Paraeducator, Health/Office Work Year: 187 days Department: Elementary School Reports To: Principal Salary Range: 20 Starting Salary: $14.79/hr Summary: Responsible for providing health care, medications, technical procedures and first aid care to chronically and/or acutely ill and/or injured students. Maintain and compile student health records, files and database and health-related reports and documents. Verify report and track student attendance. Assist with other office clerical tasks. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Daily 27% Provide health and first aid care to sick and/or injured students. Duties include triage, determining the severity of the illness/injury, communicating with the school registered nurse and parents as needed. Complete Student Accident Report,, call 911 if necessary, monitor chronically ill students, practice Standard Precautions to prevent the exposure of self and others to diseases, disposing properly of body fluids. Perform technical procedures as necessary and delegated by the school Registered Nurse. (e.g., diabetes management skills, g-tube feedings, catheterization, etc.). Occasionally assist students in and out of wheel chairs for positioning, diaper changing and toileting while practicing proper body mechanics. Daily 15% Perform school attendance duties, including verifying unreported absences and tardiness, notifying principal and parents/caregivers, recording attendance information, tracking students with problem attendance and notifying the school nurse when a student has health-related excessive absences. D/A 10% Perform clerical and secretarial duties as necessary. Daily 10% Maintain all student immunization files and ensure all students have an age or grade appropriate Certificate of Immunization. Prepare needed immunization plans and track students who are in the process of becoming up-to-date with immunizations. Daily 10% Document care, student parent and staff communications, and treatments provided to and related to each student in the electronic health file and/or his/her individual health file as directed by Health Services documentation guidelines. Daily 5% Administer medications and log into daily medication records, notify parents/caregiver when medications are running low and ensure paperwork is properly maintained and on file for each student receiving medication. Daily 3% Prepare and maintain student health files, documents and reports, including documents to inform teachers/specialists of children with special health needs and District and State health reports. Daily 1% Act as school child abuse representative and assist with reporting suspected child abuse. Wkly 3% Maintain a clean, hygienic, orderly, and appropriately stocked health office, including inventorying and ordering supplies. . Daily 10% Communicate with School Nurse regarding all student health-related issues in an appropriate and timely fashion. Daily 5% Coordinate, participate, and perform vision and hearing screenings for students each year. Make vision referrals for appropriate students and track student follow-up care. Daily 1% Perform other duties as assigned.

    EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

    High school diploma or equivalent; Associate's degree preferred. Must complete training for medication administration, CPR, and First Aid within 1 month of hire. Complete health para training series within 2 months of hire.

    EXPERIENCE: No experience required. Experience with student information system preferred. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EQUIPMENT & OTHER: Oral and written communication, interpersonal, organizational, decision making, problem solving, public relations, and basic math skills. Ability to make sound decisions in crisis situations. Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job. Ability to work with ill and injured students and students with special needs. Basic health care knowledge. Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers required. Operating knowledge of general office equipment required within 2 weeks after hire. Operating knowledge of student information system required within 2 months after hire. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: CPR and First Aid certifications required within 1 month after hire and renew every 2 years. Medication Administration Training required every 3 years. Child Care Immunization class required annually. Annual Standard Precautions training SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY: This job is responsible for supervising the behavior and safety of students while in the health office and in the school office. Acts as a resource for individuals throughout the school by providing care to sick and injured students; by providing data and reports regarding student health, immunizations, attendance and student count; and by providing assistance in the school office. SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS: High exposure to self to disease due to caring for sick and injured students and to repetitive motion injuries due to keyboarding and filing. May also expose others to disease or further injury if a person in this position fails to properly handle or dispose of body fluids or administer proper and timely care to sick or injured students. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to analyze, communicate, instruct, evaluate and use interpersonal skills. The employee is frequently required to copy, coordinate, compute and compile. The employee is occasionally required to compare and negotiate.
