The Teams, Interventions, Evaluation and Resources for Supportive Schools (TIERSS) grant is a five-year effort to build the capacity of target schools and the district to implement the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS), with a focus on improving professional learning and implementation support for core components of the MTSS in the following areas: school climate team leadership, classroom interventions, data and analysis strategy, family and community engagement, and prevention and mitigation of substance abuse.

The Classroom SEL Interventions Specialist will report to the TIERSS Grant Manager in the Office of Social Emotional Learning and will support grant schools to create an environment that promotes student learning and development through classroom support for student behavior. Working collaboratively with grant program staff, the Classroom SEL Interventions Specialist will also share best practices throughout the district.

The Classroom SEL Interventions Specialist will be held to the following responsibilities:

  • Develop the SEL skills of teachers and other classroom staff through appropriate training and coaching

  • Collaborate with school leaders to develop and implement school wide strategies for evidence-based, trauma sensitive, and culturally competent classroom behavioral interventions using restorative practices, evidence-based behavioral strategies, and the Conscious Discipline model

  • Train teachers and other classroom staff to de-escalate student incidents and behavior

  • Meet regularly with classroom intervention leads at grant schools to build their leadership capacity and plan for school wide supports

  • Collect and analyze progress monitoring and evaluation data for grant schools

  • Collaborate with external partners to provide materials and training supports to grant schools and OSEL

  • Provide district-wide training on classroom interventions

  • Train OSEL staff on best practices for classroom intervention

  • Document and compile best practices to develop a resources guide for classroom intervention

  • Assist grant schools with the development of general education Tier 3 Behavior Support Plans for individual students

  • Ensure that all reporting timelines and deadlines are met.

  • Collaborate with grant team and other OSEL staff at PLCs, grant team meetings, and Supportive Schools team meetings

  • Perform other duties as assigned



In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Classroom SEL Intervention Specialist must possess the following qualifications:

Type of Education Required :

  • Master's Degree in Education, Social Work/Counseling, or other Human Services Field



Type of Experience and Number of Years :

  • At least 3 years teaching experience, including effective teaching of diverse learners

  • At least 2 years leading or coaching the implementation of school wide SEL initiatives



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Training in and experience effectively implementing restorative practices, Conscious Discipline, and/or other evidence-based behavioral strategies for the classroom

  • Ability to interface with students, families, teachers, school leaders, and classroom support staff to find creative solutions to challenging problems

  • Strong written and presentation skills

  • Ability and willingness to work both collaboratively and independently

  • Ability to complete concurrent, complex assignments and to prioritize assignments to meet deadlines and project requirements

  • Strong analytical, time management and interpersonal skills

  • Proficient in Google Suite, including Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Forms, as well as MS Office Suite

  • Willingness to work flexible schedules (evenings and weekends, as necessary)

  • Must possess a valid U.S. Driver's License. If selected, must have permanent use of an automobile that is properly insured.



Residency Requirement:

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and must maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
