JOB SUMMARY:
This position is accountable for coordinating a school health program including the delivery of services to students and staff members in order to enhance health and wellness in the school community. Duties are to be performed in accordance with standards of professional school nurse practice, District/state board of education policies and procedures, and Illinois State law regarding nurse practice.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
General Experience:
  1. Professional Educator License with Certified School Nurse endorsement registered in Lake County;
  2. Registered Professional Nurse (RN) License;
  3. First Aid, CPR and AED Certification;
  4. Child Hearing and Vision Testing Certification;
  5. One (1) year of professional nursing experience in pediatric, adolescent, community or mental health nursing, or health program management;
  6. School Nurse experience preferred;
  7. Bilingual preferred.


10 Month Position - Starting at $46,524.84/year

LICENSURES, CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel between buildings.

  24. Skill in using specific equipment to administer medications, pregnancy tests, including nebulizers, inhalers, and rectal and IM/SQ administration;
  25. Skill in verbal and written communication, especially report writing;
  26. Skill in vision screening using Snellen/MOTV charts;
  27. Ability to act as a role model to health care staff by demonstrating professional behaviors;
  28. Ability to analyze and evaluate proper care and treatment;
  29. Ability to develop therapeutic relationships with students and their caregivers;

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following identifies the primary and essential functions of the position and is not intended to be an
exhaustive listing of all duties.
  1. Attends workshops and training sessions in order to maintain skills;
  2. Changes dressings;
  3. Communicates with families, staff and community liaisons to interpret and facilitate the transfer of health data;
  4. Conducts and supervises health screenings on children which includes screenings include vision,muscle-eye balance, hearing, height and weight (growth), scoliosis, and educational medical information;
  5. Counsels staff, parents and students regarding health needs including pregnant and parenting teens;
  6. Depending upon the age of the student population for which health services are being provided, may initiate the permanent health record;
  7. Distributes and maintains records of controlled drugs and insures their security;
  8. Documents nursing interventions on medical records;
  9. Ensures cleanliness of equipment and environment;
  10. Establishes, maintains, reviews and updates student health records on an ongoing basis;
  11. Facilitates connections to community primary health and dental providers and, at times, facilitates transportation and funding for health and dental appointments;
  12. Gathers and reviews health information for IEP's, IFSP's and SST assessments;
  13. Independently implements the nursing process with students including carrying out physicians orders regarding diet, medication and treatment; performs assessments;
  14. Instructs students, staff and family members regarding treatments, nursing plans and related patient care issues directed toward an awareness and understanding of health issues;
  15. Interprets medical records to the school staff, as necessary;
  16. Interprets vision and hearing results, including tympanometry, and determines the need for rescreening or referral. Monitors ongoing hearing and vision concerns;
  17. Keeps current on local, State and national health issues and concerns;
  18. Maintains availability of medications and supplies;
  19. Maintains records and makes reports including records for third-party billings;
  20. Makes decisions in routine cases;
  21. Monitors and ensures quality care through observation and evaluation;
  22. Organizes and facilitates community advisory boards regarding input, review and approval of health
  23. Participates in supportive team meetings, conferences, and community advisory boards as assigned;
  24. Provides clinical supervision and training of health assistants and other paraprofessionals in the administration of individual student health planning, medications, blood glucose monitoring, providing first aid;
  25. Provides for the direct care and assessment of children in the classrooms, including lice screening;
  26. Provides health counseling;
  27. Provides training to staff, parents and health assistants throughout the year regarding school-specific and general health needs;
  28. Reports on physiological and mental health status of students;
  29. Responds to emergencies;
  30. Reviews and assesses health histories, medical information, including State-mandated immunizations;
  31. Reviews and establishes Individual Health Plans and emergency plans, as indicated;
  32. Reviews and facilitates health evaluations of children and families;
  33. Reviews objective data, such as temperature, color, and lung sounds, to determine the state of health;
  34. Reviews the past and current health history of each child to determine eligibility for specialized programs and for ongoing health and dental needs;
  35. Supervises and provides for the administration of medications, as needed;
  36. Teaches various health-related issues, such as bloodborne pathogens, puberty issues, and hygiene, to students and staff;
  37. Works with the staff and community medical resources regarding linking health and medical needs;
  38. Performs related duties as assigned.
