Reading Specialist Position
The Cincinnati Public Schools is excited to announce the creation of a Reading Specialist teaching position.

Educational Requirements: Bachelor's degree in secondary or elementary education, or higher from an accredited college or university
Certification: Reading Endorsement or meeting Third Grade Reading Guarantee requirement
Reports to: The Department of Early Childhood Education
Contract Provisions: 191 days Limited CFT Contract
Training & Experience: Training in Orton Gillingham and/or LETRS training required

Essential Functions / Skills:
  • Creating Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plans for students reading below level in grades K-3
  • Assist teachers with RTI for students who are struggling to read at applicable grade level
  • Present to teachers in the building PD on interventions to ensure all students are reading at applicable grade level, & CPS meets Third Grade Reading Guarantee compliance & components
  • Work with students who have Reading Improvement Monitoring Plans either one-on-one in groups to bring students up to grade applicable grade level
  • Attend weekly meetings for professional development and information gathering on the Third Grade Reading Guarantee
  • Work on implementing services and reporting data on the Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plans
  • Share with other Reading Specialist strategies, data and resources to assist others with improving reading readiness
  • Administer assessments to student along with on-going progress monitoring (MAP, DIBELS)
  • Work with teachers & students to raise student achievement scores


  • Performance Responsibilities:
    • Commitment to helping urban students to succeed; with an emphasis on urban schools with diverse socioeconomic levels, racial and ethnic backgrounds
    • Willingness to spend the time needed to effectively meet the challenges, objectives, and mission of the CPS district
    • Ability to be professional, collaborative, and dedicated to the implementation of action plans for student progress
    • Oversees and maintains a positive academic atmosphere conducive to learning and the safety of students
    • Implements instructional program, and maintains a climate where students are actively engaged in a meaningful and productive learning experiences
    • Identifies, selects, and modifies instructional resources to meet the needs of the students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs
    • Assists in assessing changing curricular needs and offers plans for improvement
    • Maintains effective and efficient records of student performance, school data, TGRG compliances
    • Consistently uses technology for the benefit of students' education
    • Establishes a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process
    • Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, and other professionals on a regular basis
    • Collaborates with peers to enhance the instructional environment
    • Ensures that student growth and achievement is continuous and appropriate for groups, and subject areas
    • Accepts responsibility for meeting his/her course and school wide student performance goals
    • Meets professional obligations through efficient work habits such as: meeting deadlines, and honoring schedules
    • Participates cooperatively with other teachers and administrators to develop a method of evaluation in conformance with district guidelines
    • Encourages students to think independently and to express original ideas
    • Maintains license requirements and professional competence through in-service educational activities
    • Meets regular attendance requirements at all times
