These positions are a part of a team of 70 serving our 8,000 students across 17 campuses. The work of successful applicants is a critical link to our growing education community, our students and to the ongoing development of future generations

These positions have flexible work days and work hours. Duties include but are not limited to: cleaning and preserving designated areas in the school buildings and assisting with seasonal grounds work. Modern equipment, efficient processes and great team training add to the flexibility and fun of the positions.

To become part of this exciting team dedicated to the facilities of the Helena Public Schools, you must have a high school diploma; 1 to 3 months experience or training; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by the district.

Current entry level salary is $14.15 per hour. On average, substitute employees work up to 30 hours per week.

Position Description

Job Title: Substitute Building Maintenance/Custodian

Department: Maintenance

Reports To: Building Administrator and/or Custodial Supervisor

Prepared Date: Spring 2016

SUMMARY : Keeps the district's buildings in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Assists in maintaining seasonal grounds work (snow, lawn) etc.

Cleans and preserves designated spaces, equipment etc. in the building.

Restocks disposable items and assists with inventory control.

Performs ongoing preventative maintenance and minor repair on plumbing, custodial equipment, building structure and hardware.

Performs minor electrical maintenance and repairs.

Performs light maintenance as needed.

Assists the visiting public utilizing school facilities with directions within the building and in obtaining and setting up needed equipment and/or materials.

Maintains building and grounds security by closing the building each school day and during special events, if needed.

QUALIFICATIONS : To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE :

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one to three months' related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience as determined by the District.

LANGUAGE SKILLS :

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before small groups or employees of the District.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS :

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY :

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES :

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climb onto ladders. The employee frequently will bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this position.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 100 pounds such as bulk furniture. The employees will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, and scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee will regularly work near or with moving mechanical parts and equipment. The employee may occasionally be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
