REPORTS TO:
Transportation Administrative Coordinator. Supervisor of Bus Operations and Director of Transportation may provide guidance and direction.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Advanced education preferred; high school diploma, general education (GED) or equivalent combination of education and experience. At lease five (5) years experience as a school bus driver or related occupation preferred. A working knowledge of school division and transportation department policies, practices, and procedures. Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and local legal requirements and guidelines of pupil transportation. Some prior managerial/supervisory experience is preferred. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Knowledge of word processing and basic computer functions. Ability to provide leadership and foster good human relations with school administrators, parents, employees and staff members dealing fairly, impartially, and tactfully. Ability to recognize problems and potential problem areas as well as provide problem solving assistance. Ability to work independently and make decisions with a minimum amount of supervision. Willingly and cooperatively performs duties that may not be specifically listed, but are within the general occupations area of responsibility and level. Ability to work in a stressful, fast paced environment.

STATE REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Must maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements, American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Certificate; and Defense Driving Course Certificate, must complete the Instructor Workshop for School Bus Driver Trainers and other training as the Director of Transportation deems necessary.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The employee must have sufficient strength and agility to move, lift and secure students in child safety restraint systems weighing up to 40 pounds and assist students weighing 60-100 pounds in entering and exiting the bus in routine and emergency situations, and must be able to renter the emergency door to assist other students. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk; sit; use hands to handle or feel object, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must be able to smell smoke, fuel, and other odors. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 150 pounds with assistance.

BASIC FUNCTION/NATURE OF WORK:

This is a skilled first line supervisory position serving as a communicative link between school bus drivers and attendants and the Transportation Director, Supervisor of Bus Operations and Administrative Coordinator to ensure safe and efficient transportation of students. The employee must demonstrate an ability to work effectively under pressure and in crisis situations. The employee typically works independently to initiate actions and/or resolve inquiries and emergencies. Develops schedules and directs daily school bus operations. Provides supervision, guidance, training, and assistance to other school bus staff members to ensure bus operations is in compliance with school division policies and regulations, Transportation Department operating procedures, directives and instructions and state laws. Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential job functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid and cold/hot weather conditions. Also, the employee is often exposed to fumes and airborne particles as well as minor vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/ILLUSTRATIVE EX OF WORK:

Include, but not limited to the following. Supervises, evaluates, instructs and assists assigned drivers and attendants. Investigates and resolves problems with school administrators, parents, students, the general public or drivers and attendants. Observes on-road performance of driver and attendants as it relates to safety and compliance with schedules, routes and times, and if needed, gives instructions to correct improper performance practices. Receives and responds to inquires concerning routing and other pupil transportation questions. Monitors the accuracy of bus operation records, i.e., schedules, specialty program reports, etc. Ensures compliance with federally mandated transportation services for homeless, Head Start and School of Choice students. Develops and updates bus schedules and routes using computerized routing and modeling tools to correct bus overload/underload situations and evaluate bus stops for safe and efficient routing. Establishes and adjusts drivers' and attendants' base hours determined by actual time required to satisfactorily complete assignments. Verifies and validates time and leave records. Investigates School Board vehicle accidents, completes required reports, and provides necessary testimony involving lawsuits. Familiarizes school bus drivers and attendants with the features of buses or bus equipment, including special equipment, and child restraint systems. Investigates and analyzes both routine and emergency situations and recommends effective solutions. May periodically perform the Administrative Coordinator's duties and responsibilities when the Coordinator is absent. Distributes correspondence to employees. Responsible for pulling and viewing VCR tape requests from schools administration, parent and drivers. Assists in the development and implementation of new programs and/or operating procedures. Adheres to established policies, regulations, and procedures. Validates skills and abilities of newly assigned driver and attendants. Attends required meetings and training. Performs other duties as assigned.

SALARY: Hiring Range: $49,858 - $70,265/year ($26.59 - $37.47/hour)
