RESPONSIBILITIES

SUMMARY: Provide young adults with disabilities (ages 18 to 21) the positive role modeling, instruction and assistance necessary to support a successful transition to post school opportunities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Under supervision of licensed staff, implement effective modeling, instructional and monitoring practices that are designed to support student achievement and skill development.

Represent the School District, Jeffco transition programs and students in a professional and positive manner at all times and in all environments.

Assist and complete functional assessments and maintain on-going data collection aligned with students? individual goals and objectives; assist in planning of student instruction and activities.

Demonstrate effective conflict resolution and problem-solving skills with students, colleagues, community members, etc.

Implement specialized procedures that are aligned with individual student needs (e.g. adaptive equipment, augmentative communication devices, personal feeding apparatus, etc.); safely provide appropriate and needed physical supports for students (i.e. positioning, pushing wheelchairs, assisting with safety procedures on accessing school or public transportation, etc.); understand and implement practices and procedures as stated on individual health care and behavior intervention plans.

Perform health and personal need duties as directed by teacher or nurse, including bathroom assistance, diapering, feeding and lifting students.

Apply de-escalation strategies.

Perform restraints, if required or applicable, after district approved trainings.

Maintain confidential information as directed.

Attend district-provided trainings and professional development.

Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma/GED required.

EXPERIENCE: Six months or more experience working with youth required. Prefer experience in working with youth with disabilities.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT: Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work with students who have a variety of disabilities.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: CPI, CPR and First Aid certificates highly recommended. Training provided by the district. Staff may be required to pass district policies related to driving school vans and activity buses, so driver?s license is needed.

SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY: This job has no staff supervisory responsibilities. This position serves as a resource in helping young adults with disabilities develop effective transition skills and abilities. Staff may be working with
students? in community without direct line of sight of teacher, but with all necessary training plans for students under their supervision.

CONTACTS: Daily contact with persons within/outside department/building, students, parents, general public, and/or district advisory communities to resolve problems and to provide or obtain information.

SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS: Potential exposure to bruises, bites, cuts, spitting, kicking, hitting and scratches. Gloves are provided to prevent exposure to bodily fluids.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, see and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision. The employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee may occasionally be required to run a short distance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds with assistance. In some positions supported by community business partners, staff will need to complete a background check, drug screening and immunization procedures. The employee is regularly required to safely access community settings while monitoring youth.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Staff will work in all types of environments, which may include walking in community, riding public transportation, and providing instruction in various community and work environments based upon training goals in each student?s plan.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate, instruct, and use interpersonal skills. The employee is frequently required to compare, analyze, copy, coordinate, compute, synthesize, evaluate, compile, and negotiate.

JUDGMENT AND DECISION-MAKING: Work is assigned by JTS coordinator, instructor, administrator or self-directed. This position requires judgment to determine an appropriate course of action for a problem. Decision making is guided by student?s IEPs, Health Action Plans/Medical Protocols, Behavior Intervention / Communication Plans, district policies, school procedures and professional judgment. Errors in judgment and decision making could potentially cause harm to students and others around them. Decision-making requires collaboration with other JTS staff members. Confidentiality is paramount.

DIVERSITY OF DUTIES: Duties require cross training in student electronic augmentative/assistive technology and using computers with students.
