POSITION TITLE: Electronics Technician

QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND EDUCATION: Comprehensive knowledge of methods and practices in the ELECTRICAL trade and of the properties, characteristics and uses of related equipment, materials, and tools. Comprehensive knowledge of local and national codes where applicable. Must be skilled in supervising, training and evaluating the work of assigned maintenance staff, and assist them with work problems. Ability to carry out maintenance responsibilities within established policies, plans and requirements and to coordinate work with other shops and departments. Ability to enforce safety and other regulations where applicable. Ability to read and interpret work orders, diagrams and sketches, and utilize computer technology applications endemic to trades sections to which assigned. Ability to estimate costs and necessary materials of work performed. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to keep accurate records and prepare reports. Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships, including successful coaching and counseling of subordinates. Willing and able to participate in Maintenance "On call" roster (2 weeks of 24/7 availability every quarter - stipend/overtime paid). Performs related work as required, or assigned.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Human Resources announces an openning for Electronics Technician; this is a full-time, 1st shift, 260 days, grade M-10 position. Incumbent performs skilled technical work in the repair, installation and maintenance of security, fire alarm, intrusion alarm and public address systems; Work is performed under the general or indirect supervision of the General Supervisor with the Maintenance Office; Serves as on-site crew leader over one or more maintenance staff, summer student or community service workers; This is the journey level specialty electrical, electronics classification; NOTE regarding work schedule/shift assignment: This 1st shift schedule is subject to change, depending upon the needs of APS. Applicant hired for a position in this class is hired for the position, not the work schedule or shift assignment. Once hired, an employee may be reassigned to another schedule or shift at the discretion of APS.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following may not include all duties performed; not all incumbents perform all essential functions delineated : Confers with supervisor to learn nature of work assignments, and to advise or consult on assignments, equipment to be used, and materials to be obtained or purchased. Installs, services and repairs and maintains a variety of security systems (fire alarm, intrusion), and/or public address systems and electrical and electronic components. Locates defects, repairs defects and checks out electronic equipment for proper operation. Orders parts for public address and security system components, and establishes replenishment levels of spare parts. Provides minor instruction to staff in the use of the public address system and the security system, and advises staff on operation problems and special servicing requests. Responds to emergency calls related to the malfunctioning of the security system, responds to alarms and to other situations pertaining to the security system (on call 24 hours). Provides advice to school based staff on security procedures, and maintains contact with police officials who respond to intrusion alarms. Prepares reports of failure to follow proper security instructions and drafts recommendations for improvements. Directs and inspects work performed by crew, summer student workers and/or community service workers. Provides guidance and training as necessary. Ensures all safety precautions, regulations and equipment are utilized appropriately, and that work complies with county building codes. Participates in set up and clean up of worksite to ensure safe environment. Performs periodic preventative maintenance to ensure system remains fully operational. Maintains records on work of crew and contractors, problems or systems changes. Performs routine maintenance and repair on tools, equipment and vehicles. Performs related work as required, or assigned.

EXPERIENCE:
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: High School Diploma or equivalent G.E.; Journeyman Level on the job training/experience; Technical Schools and workshops are ongoing. LICENSE: CERTIFICATIONS: Must have a valid Drivers' license; PREFERRED: applicants with a valid Master-level Electrician license; Minimum eight years at the Journeyman-Electrician level. NOTE: All APS employees authorized to drive APS vehicles are subject to either the Omnibus Transportation Act drug and alcohol testing procedure (if required to possess CDL) or the Arlington Public Schools Alcohol and Drug testing procedures (if CDL is not required). PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES : Strength and dexterity to perform all tasks, including lifting and carrying heavy objects; assembling and disassembling scaffolds and equipment; and operating or utilizing all tools, equipment and vehicles. Work requires significant standing, bending, crawling, stooping, and working in tiring positions, excellent visual acuity and ability to distinguish color coded wiring. HAZARDS/UNUSUAL DEMANDS: Works in a wide range of climatic conditions. Exposure to electrical or electronic voltage, fumes, and dust requires use of safety goggles, masks, insulated shoes and tools, back braces, hard hats and gloves. Work involves climbing onto roofs, ladders, scaffolds, and into high places, and crawling and/or working in confined areas. May be required to work unusual hours and be designated for 24 hour on-call.
