Department Description:

The Translator serves schools and offices in Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) by facilitating translation of parent communication documents in target language by request. Employees in this position completes his/her own work and serves as part of a translation team for all written translation services, collaborating with other translators in this office, and performing translations and proofing documents; and prepares accurate document translations, adhering to timelines and workflow expectations. This work is performed under general supervision.

Salary: $18.00 - $35.21 (External Candidates may not be placed above Step 6 $23.73)

Detailed Description:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Reads through original material, recreates it in the target language, and ensures that the meaning of the source text is retained;
  • Operates Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) tools and Translation Memory(TM) software such as Wordfast to ensure consistency of translation within documents and leverage efficiency;
  • Incorporates the use of specialist dictionaries, thesauruses, and research tools throughout the translation process;
  • Researches phraseology to find the correct translation;
  • Serves as a liaison with school and/or office requestors to discuss any unclear points in the documents;
  • Proofreads and edits final translated versions of documents and publications;
  • Provides a grammatically correct, well- expressed final version of the translated text, in the same document format in which the request was presented;
  • Facilitates written translations and publications consistent with State and federal guidelines for written parent communications;
  • Prioritizes assignments to meet deadlines; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to provide documented training;
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of grammar technicalities of English and target language to include colloquialisms and how to translate them;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff;
  • Ability to establish rapport with employees from diverse cultures and backgrounds;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Docs, calendar coordination, InDesign, CAT and TM tools, workflow management, and Oracle;
  • Type a minimum of 30-40 WPM;
  • Ability to problem solve;
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing in English and target language;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Must be well organized and detailed oriented with the ability to adhere to strict project timelines and deadlines;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks; and
  • Ability to provide outstanding customer service.

  • EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Graduation from high school required with college level training in written translation or certification by the American Translator's Association (ATA) preferred; or any equivalent combinations of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    None required.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
