The position is responsible for assisting the Director of Special Education in the leadership, coordination, supervision and management of the District's Affective Needs programs. This may include students struggling with depression, anxiety, and other mental health needs as well as behavioral challenges. The Affective Needs Program Director should be committed to working collaboratively with teachers and the school community to develop an inclusive model that strives to incorporate research based interventions in a center based classroom, the general education classroom and the surrounding community. The Affective Needs Program Director supports administration, teachers, para-professional, student body and parents in the achievement of student's academic, behavioral and social success. They should be experienced in teaching and implementing positive behavior supports to facilitate learning in the areas of academic, executive functioning, behavioral, and social-emotional regulation.

Student achievement is improving and teachers and staff are actively engaged in providing instruction to nearly 5,000 students everyday. We are focused on helping every child become a better reader, writer and mathematician and preparing them for their post-secondary careers, whether that be college, technical training or the workforce.

Garfield School District Re-2 implements a variety services to address student's individual needs. In compliance with both state and federal laws, special education programs are available for students with disabilities. Garfield School District Re-2 offers a range of special education services to meet the varied needs of our students. Each school has a moderate needs program, while Graham Mesa Elementary, Highland Elementary, Elk Creek Elementary, Rifle Middle, Riverside Middle and Rifle High School also house center based Significant Support Needs Programs. We also have a 18-21 transition program at Rifle High School.

These services can be seen in the form of inclusionary support, collaborative programs, pull out programs, self contained programs and Day Treatment programs. Garfield School District Re-2 strives to match students with programs that match their individual needs and challenge them as learners.

Garfield School District Re-2 also provides related services that continue to allow our students to be successful. These are services such as Speech Therapy, School Psychology, Occupational Therapy services, Vision Specialist and other low incidence services that help address stated needs in a student's Individualized Education Plan and support their success and participation in school.
