About the American Dream School

The American Dream School is a dual-language (Spanish/English) school grades 6-12 in the Mott Haven area of the South Bronx. We will offer a project-based, dual-language program that cultivates bilingualism and biliteracy.

 

About the Position

The American Dream School is seeking a bilingual (Spanish/English) motivated, and engaging teacher who is committed to serving English Language Learners and cultivating bilingualism and biliteracy.  The ideal candidate has a great love and understanding of middle school or high school content, including themes and concepts. This candidate will also be able to break down content area concepts into a language that makes the content accessible for different learning styles and abilities. Lastly, he/she will have the ability to create real-world applications/projects for students to see how the content they are learning is used in everyday life.

 

Responsibilities

Classroom Preparation

  • Discuss assigned duties with teachers for planning, preparation and development of teaching aids
  • Prepare lesson materials, including technological equipment and bulletin boards
  • Implementing curriculum
  • Distribute materials and assist in other time management/organizational duties
  • Type, file, and duplicate materials
  • Plan unit plans and submit 1 week prior to commencing for feedback
  • Plan engaging lessons using the SIOP model for content area
  • Create activities that include the use of technology
  • Submit weekly overview every Friday by 3:35pm
  • Upload lesson plans by 7:30 am on the morning it is taught
  • Plan bi-weekly activities for advisory based on our DREAM values

Teaching Responsibilities

  • Tutor and assist children individually or in small groups
  • Assist in the distribution, collection and grading of tests and homework assignments
  • Observe students' performance, and record relevant data to assess progress
  • Participate in teacher-parent conferences regarding students’ progress or problems
  • Provide extra assistance to students with special needs including physical help
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings
  • Create a safe, welcoming classroom environment to support student learning and which reflects the development of their understanding
  • Prepare and deliver focused instruction
  • Conduct two (2) peer observations per month using Teachboost and schedule debriefing sessions
  • Record “next steps” that arise from debriefing sessions in Teachboost
  • Identify and use an effective co-teaching model every lesson 
  • Use technology to create Google Classroom and Google Docs
  • Set professional goals pertaining to teaching and learning
  • Attend professional development to meet professional goals set

Classroom Management Responsibilities

  • Supervise and manage students in all spaces, upholding ADS core values, rules and policies
  • Instruct, maintain, and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and material
  • Maintain accurate records and create reports 
  • Create and monitor student progress toward achieving instructional objectives and goals on student plans
  • Be the point person and main contact for a small advisory (i.e. document progress with each student, monitor their grades, make bi-weekly phone calls to parents to update them on student progress, help students advocate for themselves when they are struggling with a class, help students reflect when needed.)
  • Update grades weekly (EOD Fridays)
  • Conduct three (3) benchmark assessments per year
  • Use data to effectively plan and modify lessons
  • Review  data to address student weaknesses

Special Education and Intervention Responsibilities (Because we are ICT Classrooms)

  • Create annual goal for students’ IEP
  • Implement and track progress of annual goals of students’ IEPs as it pertains to your content area
  • Write progress reports (Present levels of Performance) for students as requested
  • Participate in yearly IEP conferences
  • Establish appropriate modifications and goals for each student
  • Modify curriculum to meet the needs of Special Education or ELL students (or Native v. Non-Native students in Spanish classes)
  • Facilitate and document parent communication (i.e child’s grade fall below a 70, it is a mandated conversation between the teacher and the parent)
  • Create remediation opportunities for students falling below a 73

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist with breakfast/lunch duties
  • Community Outreach
  • Work 2 Saturdays a year, supervising students on trips, tournaments or events
  • Teacher work time:  7:25am-4:10pm  
  • Follow S.T.A.R.T. and E.N.D.E.D. procedures
  • Attend all 4 Parent-Teacher Conferences from 2pm-7pm
  • Perform other assigned duties

Position Requirements

  •  Bilingual Spanish/English preferred
  •  Strong organizational skills
  •  Maintain confidentiality and meets deadlines, complete assignments with consistent accuracy;
  •  Tech-savvy; familiarity and experience with Microsoft Office, Gmail, Google docs/drive; 
  •  Effective verbal, writing and listening skills.
  •  New York State Teaching Certification required.
