POSITION SUMMARY:  The purpose of this position is to work with small groups or individual children with emotional and behavior disorders, in a therapeutic special education classroom under supervision.   

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implements therapeutically educational programs for specific groups of students in accordance with goals specified in each student’s Individualized Education Plan.
  • Collaborates with team members resulting in IEP driven multidisciplinary program for each student.
  • Provides program of classroom management skills that recognize and include consideration of the characteristics of and the methodology of the student population.
  • Prepares and maintains a safe, healthy, academically, and behaviorally effective classroom environment appropriate to ongoing and changing classroom activities.
  • Participates in and performs educational diagnostic studies in collaboration with others as needed.
  • Participates in qualitative professional development activities.
  • Maintains records and writes reports on relevant activities in timely manner.
  • Uses therapeutic and general education materials and methods, and plans for their appropriate use.
  • Maintains ongoing communication relationship with social worker and JCFS staff to achieve a social and educational benefit for the student.
  • Willing and able to perform a variety of tasks to ensure the safety of students.
  • Successfully completes training in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI); successfully complete all requirements to maintain certification in TCI.
  • Effectively intervenes in students’ disruptive behavior, both verbal and physical; including using TCI prescribed methods to de-escalate critical situations.
  • Must be able to be aware of the whereabouts of the students at all times and be able to physically intervene to limit dangerous behavior as necessary.
  • Uses TCI prescribed methods to manually restrain students who are a variety of heights, weights, and strength capacities should they become physically out of control and consequently a danger to him/herself or others.  This task may involve taking the student from a standing position to the floor, deflecting and or absorbing blows, bumps, kicks, spitting and other physically aggressive acts, moving furniture or other large, heavy objects in order to clear a space in which the student can be safely restrained.

QUALIFICATIONS: (Knowledge, Experience & Abilities)

  • Position requires a bachelor’s degree in Special Education from an accredited institution.
  • Must be certified by Illinois State Board of Education as a Special Education Teacher.
  • LBS 1 Credential Required.
  • Must successfully complete Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) training.
