The Social Services Specialist position was created to support the Center for Higher Education and Career Support in addressing issues that impede our students' ability to be successful in reaching their emotional, social and academic goals. The position serves as an integral role within the team dynamic at CHECS. The ideal candidate can manage multiple responsibilities; work independently and within a team, as well as understands the complexity of young adults navigating systems and developing the needed skills to be successful. In addition, the candidate needs to be flexible. The Social Services Specialist will report directly to the Social Services Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Adhere to agency protocols and standards of excellence
  • Provide consult and support to the CHECS office
  • Conduct field visits to students' homes, universities, and other community programs
  • Provide community referrals as needed to address concerns through collaboration with the CHECS team
  • Maintain collaboration and communication with CHECS staff regarding identified concerns and the approach to address them
  • Facilitate workshops/trainings for students and staff
  • Serve as an advocate for students with outside entities
  • Perform other duties assigned

Administrative Responsibilities
  • Input case notes for all active students monthly
  • Update the Social Service Tracking Report regularly
  • Store and back up all documentation in accordance with Social Services protocols

CSO Engagement
  • Maintain frequent and regular contact with students to monitor progress and to troubleshoot concerns
  • Establish and maintain relationships with campus and community liaisons through ongoing communication
  • Participate in larger office events and initiatives in order to build rapport with students



Skills and Qualifications
  • A commitment to the agency's mission and programs
  • Master's Degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, Human Services, or a related field
  • Experience working with young adults preferred
  • Must exhibit a passion for working with young adults and their families; as well as the ability to create a strong connection to the community
  • Must be able to move around in the community and withstand exposure to environmental factors
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to work as part of a collaborative team within CHECS
  • Knowledge of outside resources available to students
  • Great attention to detail and the ability to work effectively with multiple individuals/systems
