ABOUT THE SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT

The Facilities Department is responsible for maintaining, servicing and improving the Jeffco Public Schools' 12 million square feet of schools and support buildings, valued at nearly $2.75 billion on 3,100 acres of land. The Facilities Department includes more than 700 employees in Building Maintenance and Site Maintenance, Construction Management, Custodial Services, Environmental Services, Energy Management, Facilities Service Desk, and Planning & Property. Overall Duties include boundaries, long-range facility planning, enrollment projections, energy and utility management, capital and bond-funded improvements, custodial services, facilities assessments, facilities maintenance, hazardous material management, landscape and paving, property management, snow removal, water and wastewater management.

RESPONSIBILITIES

SUMMARY: Perform testing and preventive maintenance work and gain a working knowledge of fire and extinguisher equipment. Provide assistance to personnel in the Electronics shop.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Perform fire alarm and extinguisher systems testing and checks: Access and read site drawing to locate extinguisher, pull stations, smoke, beam and heat detectors, horns, strobes and other fire alarm components. Test individual heads with smoke or heat testing equipment. Communicate test results with lead technician to assure correct system inspection and operation. Check systems for proper operation.

Convey courtesy, credibility and competency in the execution of tasks and in communicating regulatory requirements to administrators and staff.

Prepare documentation of fire/extinguisher testing in Microsoft Excel and/or Word programs. Compile, update and secure fire extinguisher inventories, inspection records and regulatory documentation.

Check, clean and/or replace extinguishers, smoke and heat detectors, horns, strobes, control modules, and other equipment as necessary. Check, troubleshoot and repair/replace fire alarm horns, strobes, pull stations and other fire alarm equipment.

Compile, update and secure fire extinguisher inventories, inspection records and regulatory documentation.

Work with school staff and students to coordinate testing and inspection of systems.

Recharge, maintain or replace extinguishers as required by use, condition and code requirements.

Operate and maintain fleet vehicle. Maintain testing equipment, tools, meters, and other equipment. Maintain truck inventory of items necessary for testing of fire alarm systems and fire extinguishers.

Provide, perform and document periodic compressed gas cylinder testing to insure extinguisher integrity and safety. Recharge, maintain or replace extinguishers as required by use, condition and code requirements. Maintain hydrostatic test equipment in accordance with Department of Transportation "Cylinder Test Facility Certification". Monitor use of materials/supplies. Assist Group Leader in planning, estimating, ordering of material/supplies and quality control. Respond to emergencies after normal working hours.

Order and pick up replacement/renewal parts as needed.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma/GED required. Enrollment in post-secondary trade trainings program preferred.

EXPERIENCE: One (1) year experience or training in construction or maintenance type work.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT: Basic math skills. Some electrical knowledge. Basic computer skills preferred. Must possess intermediate level of skills with Microsoft Excel and Word programs. Possess a working knowledge of fire/security schematics, blueprints and construction documents.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: Valid Colorado driver's license. First Aid certification highly recommended. Must obtain National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies Level One (NICET) certificate in Fire Alarm within 24 months of employment. Valid compressed Gas Cylinder testing Certification and ICC/NAFED certification in portable fire extinguishers within 24 months of hire, district will provide training.

SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY: This position has no supervisory responsibilities; however, may direct the work of seasonal temporary unskilled workers. This position determines the location and type of extinguishers to be place within District buildings and insure they are inspected and maintained in accordance with applicable codes: Train Facility Managers on the use and inspection of portable fire extinguishers.

CONTACTS: Daily contact with persons in same work unit/building four routine internal matters, and with persons outside department/building including school sites to provide a service.

SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS: Must work off of a ladder and man lifts up to 50 feet high. Low exposure to self to bruises due to falling and working with hand tools, and to cuts due to working with sheet metal. Medium exposure to self of fractured bones due to falling from ladder and repetitive motion injuries due to working with hands tools.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate with occasional exposure to fire alarm horns.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate. The employee is frequently required to analyze, copy, coordinate, compute, evaluate, and use interpersonal skills. The employee is occasionally required to compare, instruct, synthesize, compile, and negotiate.

JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING: Work is assigned by Group Leader or Journey Technician. This position requires application of technical knowledge to check, replace, fix, clean, and adjust equipment and/or components. Work is guided by department policies, International Fire Codes, National Electrical Codes, International Building Codes, and Uniform Mechanical Codes. Decision making requires collaboration with Journey Technicians, Plumbers, Electrical Technicians, and Group Leader. This position is occasionally involved in decision making. Errors in decision making could lead to uncomfortable, unsafe, and unhealthy learning environments; increased energy costs; and liability issues.

DIVERSITY OF DUTIES: Duties require cross-training in electrical, electronics, and security systems. Duties and actions impact individuals within the building.
