Student Engagement Coordinator/Staff Assistant B - East Boston High School

Reports to: Principal
Terms: Managerial Tier B

Job Responsibilities:

The Staff Assistant will provide operational support to the school leadership team and will be responsible for the implementation of processes and policies that support a strong school culture and climate. The Staff Assistant will investigate potentially negative situations and assist the school administration in managing and providing remediation and resolution to matters involving conflict. The Staff Assistant will also support the school wide goals. The Staff Assistant reports directly to the school leader and work closely with members of the BPS Office of Opportunity and Achievement Gap. The Staff Assistant will collaborate with other staff within the school and Central Office to create systems that support the leadership opportunities of students at the school.

Responsibilities
  1. Works collaboratively with school leaders to ensure effective communication to students, parents, staff, and community
  2. Works collaboratively with all professional support staff, including itinerants and partners
  3. Meets collaboratively with the school leader once per week
  4. Assist with the implementation and monitoring of school-wide discipline system including student behavior management systems, classroom management strategies, student discipline report record keeping and case management
  5. Actively participate on our CBHM and/or SST teams to support a multi-tiered, school-wide framework aimed at acknowledging appropriate student behavior.
  6. Organize, plan and oversee monthly events
  7. Provide support for the planning and execution of school safety at special events such as, but not limited to assemblies, graduation, family engagement evenings
  8. Ensure student discipline records are properly maintained and updated at the school
  9. Assists the school administration in managing and resolving potentially negative situations to ensure the safety and security of all students and staff
  10. Implement restorative justice practices involving conflict
  11. Serves as a liaison for youth resources (e.g. CHINS,Department of Children and Families, Department of Youth Services, and other external agencies)
  12. Consults with parents and community agencies to provide early interventions for students
  13. Is visible and available to students, teachers, and staff members
  14. Monitors and patrols the corridors regularly (before school, during passing time, during class time, and after school) to ensure that students are in class and to help prevent potential disciplinary situations from occurring
  15. Recruit for and facilitate student lunch groups and Ten Boys Initiative groups to assist with both peer conflict and building students' capacity of personal responsibility
  16. Provides positive reinforcement for the school uniform policy.
  17. Checks in regularly with teachers regarding discipline issues and progress of targeted students.
  18. Record incidents with appropriate documentation and follow school process for reporting.
  19. Monitors arrival and dismissal of the school, consistently looking for ways to implement the most efficient procedures
  20. Performs other related responsibilities as assigned by the Principal
Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma / GED
  • 3 years related experience
  • Boston Resident
  • Demonstrate leadership experience, working effectively with students, teachers, families and administrators
  • Excellent writing and communication skills demonstrating ability to present reports in clear and concise manner
  • Experience working collaborative, team-oriented atmosphere; highly organized; able to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrates ability to manage time well and work in a self-directed way
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associates or Bachelor Degree

  2. Communication and management skills necessary to ensure a smooth school operation
  3. Ability to create, monitor, and maintain systems that enhance organizational efficiency
  4. Ability and desire to work in a fast paced, highly disciplined, but sometimes unpredictable school environment
  5. Willingness to work autonomously, collaboratively, and/or under the direction of senior staff, as needed
  6. Maturity, humility, strong work ethic, and roll-up-my sleeves attitude
  7. Strong belief that all students in BPS can achieve at high levels

TERMS:
Managerial Tier B

NOTE: School-based managerial employees will work 223 days between July 1st and June 30th each year. The 223 day work-year will include the 180 days in which school is in session, and the additional days will be determined by the employee and the principal or headmaster of the school. This position subject to the City of Boston residency requirement.

School-based managerial employees are not eligible for vacation time or compensatory time. In the event of school cancellation due to snow or inclement weather, school-based managerial employees need not report to work.
