Reporting to the Director of Compliance & Training in the Office of Student Protections and Title IX, which now includes the Equal Opportunity Compliance Office, the Compliance Specialist is responsible for ensuring that the district is in compliance with Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, and related laws, regulations, and policies.

The Compliance Specialist will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

  • Developing and implementing effective compliance programs to ensure the district's compliance with Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, and all applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations, Board policies and labor contracts.

  • Creating, implementing, and monitoring the District's compliance with the requirements and obligations to the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR);

  • Collecting and compiling data for compliance needs, internal and external reporting, and other inquiries;

  • Cross-collaborating with other CPS offices and departments, to track compliance with various training programs;

  • Partnering with subject matter experts from other CPS offices and departments to identify additional compliance needs and the necessary solutions;

  • Auditing processes, practices, and documents to identify additional compliance needs;

  • Identifying and implementing operational improvements to streamline internal processes, increase efficiency, and improve services;

  • Assisting with the alignment of all written procedures and content across units, both internally and externally, to present a consistent message to all audiences;

  • Assisting with the documentation of existing procedures into written format;

  • Developing, monitoring, updating and maintaining educational and informational content on the CPS website and CPS Knowledge Center in partnership with the Communications Office, IT Department, and other departments;

  • Monitoring related government regulations to recommend appropriate changes to internal procedures and policies;

  • Assisting with the training of employees on compliance procedures and related laws; and

  • Performing additional ad hoc duties as assigned.



Type of Education Required:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

  • Master's degree or Juris Doctorate degree a plus.



Type of Experience Required :

  • Minimum of 3 years of compliance-related experience.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent writing skills, including the ability to write procedures and summary reports in a concise, organized, and logical manner;

  • Exceptional interpersonal and verbal skills, including the ability to present information to audiences;

  • Training experience a plus;

  • Spanish skills in writing and speaking a plus;

  • Knowledge of anti-discrimination policies and laws is preferred;

  • Knowledge of Title VI, Title VII, and Title IX is preferred;

  • Expert user of Microsoft and Google office suites;

  • Knowledge of CPS data systems a plus;

  • Refined judgement with the ability to manage highly sensitive and confidential information.

  • Ability to bring projects to a close with minimal supervision;

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, respond immediately to multiple constituencies, and meet continuous critical deadlines;

  • Ability to build relationships, establish collaborative partnerships, and work with a wide range of constituencies with diplomacy and tact;

  • Skilled multi-tasker and excellent time manager;

  • Ability to simultaneously achieve multiple goals and manage multiple projects; and

  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to produce consistent high-quality work;



Residency Requirement :

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of his or her CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
