QUALIFICATIONS:

Associates Degree or High School Diploma/GED and NCLB required. Must be willing to participate in ongoing professional development.

Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.

Current CPR/First Aid Certification.

At least 1 year of experience working with children with disabilities.

Ability to closely work with a student(s) specialized needs.

A high tolerance for frustration and a high degree of patience.

Ability to effectively use written and verbal skills to communicate with teachers, students, supervisors and parents.

Ability to take initiative to creatively solve problems, and to participate and communicate as a member of a team.

Demonstrate a high degree of customer service skills and professionalism.

Organizational, clerical and computer literacy abilities required.

Regular attendance is required.

Other qualifications to the above that the Board may find acceptable and appropriate.

* Supervisor may choose to waive some qualifications.

REPORTS TO: Principal/Assistant Principal or designee

SUPERVISES: Not applicable

JOB GOAL: To work closely with assigned student(s) on a regular basis in an effort to provide them with the nursing services, physical help and academic support they need to gain full benefits from the District's Special Education Program. This may include tube feedings, changing diapers, catheterizations administering medications and the ongoing physical health needs of students in class.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assist the student with a variety of tasks that would facilitate full access to educational programs.

Perform clerical work for the teacher and health services

Assist student in lavatories, lunchroom and hallways.

Prepare and supply audio-visual equipment as designated by the teacher.

Inventory, distribute and collect educational materials from supply areas as requested.

Supervise student who requires transportation.

Assist with one-to-one and small group instruction of students as assigned and directed by teacher.

Alert to potential hazards that may occur to ensure safety of student.

Required to attend mandatory State annual training.

Maintain confidentiality of records/communications.

Administer first aid according to the standing orders of the school District physician.

Maintain effective classroom schedule with regards to the health needs of students.

Administer medications and/or treatment as ordered by student's Primary Care Provider and requested by parents.

Work under the direction of teacher and certified school nurse.

Be responsible for referring students who are ill to school nurse in accordance with School District Procedures.

Assist school nurse and teacher in maintaining school health and child accounting records.

Change/assist with changing student's diapers and clothes that are soiled.

Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

Make medically related telephone calls to parents. Keep written logs to parents in notebooks

Keep Medical Assistance logs.

Attend meetings to coordinate services for student with community agencies and class advisor.

Assist in preparing displays for bulletin boards and showcases.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: School year

EVALUATION: For new employees, evaluations will be performed according to the current collective bargaining agreement. For transferring employees, evaluations will be done at 30 days. All regular employees will be evaluated at least yearly.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:

Physical Demands:

Ability to assist student in and out of wheelchair for transfer, changes, etc.

50% standing/walking and 50% sitting.

Lifting dependent upon weight of particular student up to 50 lbs.; climbing stairs.

Ability to maneuver student/adult into a safe position for administering First Aid or CPR.

Sensory Abilities:

Normal/Corrected vision.

Temperament:

Ability to work as a member of a team.

Must be courteous and able to deal effectively with people.

Must be cooperative, congenial and service-oriented.

Ability to work with little supervision.

Ability to work in an isolated area.

High degree of patience and tolerance.

Ability to be flexible.

Mental Demands:

High degree of patience and tolerance. Ability to interpret detailed written and verbal communications and ability to perform basic math skills. Ability to work independently and react appropriately in emergency situations.

Exposure to communicable diseases.
