The Syracuse City School District represents 34 schools and 4 non-traditional education programs and serves over 21,000 students in grades Pre K-12. 78% of SCSD students qualify for free or reduced lunch price, and approximately 20% are served by the Office of Special Education. 77% of the students in the school district are students of color.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Non-traditional program teachers will have a passion for supporting students and their families in a holistic, integrated style. They will work on a team of teachers to plan and deliver an integrated educational program individualized to student needs. The teacher will be skilled users of data who can intervene and adjust instruction as needed in the moment. The teacher will create and update individual learning plans which will include academic, social emotional and counseling services.

REPORTS TO: Program Principal

EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Delivering instructional program through a project based learning approach in a holistic, integrated style
  • Using appropriate assessment instruments pertinent to instructional areas to assess student progress
  • Preparing and maintaining individual learning plans with each student
  • Developing and maintaining a classroom environment conducive to effective learning
  • Utilizing varied instructional techniques, media, and technology through individual and/or group sessions designed to meet the educational, social, and emotional needs of the students
  • Provide nurturing, supportive, and positive classroom environment that encourages student ownership and reflection
  • Maintaining a growth mindset, consistently using improvement cycles to investigate, iterate, and reflect on challenges and possible solutions
  • Participate in student intake and transition conferences
  • Plan, adapt and modify instruction based on students emotional, behavioral, academic and social needs
  • Initiate behavioral interventions, health services, and counseling services on campus and referring students and families to community agencies as appropriate
  • Maintain an orderly and safe classroom environment
  • Collaborate with school and district personnel to ensure student success is maximized
  • Collaborate to ensure the right resources, goals, objectives are identified for each student
  • Communicate with administration about classroom concerns
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians about student progress
  • Partner with school counseling services and mental health providers in order to positively affect student success
  • Participate in staff development activities, workshops, and conferences to expand professional knowledge and skills
  • Reflecting on and develop culturally responsive practices that foster strong, positive learning partnerships with SCSD students
  • Collaboratively plan and participate in school wide events
