The Position – The DeKalb County Board of Education seeks an outstanding educational leader to serve as Superintendent of Schools. The Board seeks an innovative leader who will help our nationally-recognized District advance its mission of increased student success, effective learning environments, and community accountability. The next Superintendent will have the opportunity to work with a dedicated school board, an engaged community, and a highly accomplished staff in order to provide an educational program that prepares all students for success in a complex and changing world. The District – The DeKalb County School District is headquartered at 1701 Mountain Industrial Boulevard in unincorporated DeKalb County, Georgia, near Stone Mountain, Georgia and in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The school district is governed by the seven-member DeKalb County of Board of Education. DeKalb County School District is Georgia’s third largest school system dedicated to preparing students for college and careers through a laser focus on rigorous, relevant classroom instruction related to each child’s needs.


The District serves nearly 100,000 students, 136 schools and centers, and 16,240 full and part time employees, including 6,775 classroom teachers. Students and parents speak 183 languages and dialects, representing 167 countries and territories. With a laser focus, DCSD is a leader in STEM/STEAM curriculum with 28 certifications as determined by the Georgia Department of Education and/or AdvancED. In addition, school choice options are available in nearly 50 schools to include theme, magnet, IB, charter, and Montessori options.

Qualifications/ Licensure – The DeKalb School Board seeks a transformative educational leader, collaborative manager, and an effective communicator who has had experience in a similar position. The Superintendent serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the DeKalb County School District; has total oversight for and provides leadership and direction relative to all issues attendant to personnel management, the daily implementation of curricular and co-curricular activities in a large, urban school system and all other operations of the school system; assures compliance with established Board goals, school system strategic plan, and all legal and procedural requirements attendant to the effective operation of the school system; reports directly to the DeKalb Board of Education and acts as the Board’s agent for the assurance of policy implementation; and serves as the Board’s primary representative to DCSD students and their parents/guardians, personnel, and the community served.

Licensure – Applicants are required to hold or provide evidence of eligibility for a Georgia Superintendent Certificate. The new Superintendent will officially assume this position on or before July 1, 2020.
