Teacher, CTE HS Health Science

Summary: Under general direction of a principal, provides leadership in an educational environment that encourages and nurtures learning for all students. Provides supervision to students in a variety of school related settings, monitors and evaluates student outcomes, develops, selects or modifies lessons plans to ensure all student needs are met, and maintains appropriate records and follows all policies and procedures of NCDPI and CMS. Provides quality standards-based instruction in the area of Health Sciences and Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Biomedical.

Essential Duties: (These duties represent a sample and may vary by position.)

    • Provides all students the best education available anywhere, preparing every child to lead a rich and productive life in the 21 st century.
    • Creates a culture of effectiveness, by setting high standards and expectations for all students.
    • Plans a program of study in the assigned content area that meets the needs, interests and abilities of assigned students.
    • Creates a classroom environment that provides for student engagement in the learning process and enables students to achieve learning objectives.
    • Prepares for classes assigned, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of the principal or his/her designee.
    • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in accordance with goals established by CMS Strategic Plan, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and communicates these objectives to students.
    • Establishes learning objectives consistent with the appraisal of student needs, requirements of NCDPI and CMS curriculum framework and knowledge of human growth and development including the Common Core and NC Essential Standards.
    • Coordinate CTE Student Organization activities for local, regional, state and/or national competition
    • Attend District PLC meetings as scheduled
    • Plans for and utilizes instructional methods, resources and evaluation techniques which motivate and enable each student to achieve learning objectives.
    • Diagnoses the learning challenges of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of central office staff as required. Provides input when necessary to student IEPs.
    • Takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
    • Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required to do so under reasonable terms.
    • Establishes relationships with colleagues, students, parents and community which reflect recognition of and respect for every individual.
    • Appraises his/her effectiveness and demonstrates successful application of skills and information acquired to increase effectiveness. Strives to maintain and improve professional effectiveness.
    • Participates in a cooperative effort with faculty and staff to plan, implement and evaluation programs of continuing school improvement.
    • Utilizes technology and current research in instruction.
    • Utilizes classroom management techniques conducive to an effective classroom climate.
    • Prepares, administers, and corrects tests and records results; evaluates student achievements.
    • Uses appropriate differentiated instructional strategies that reflect each student's learning style.
    • Participate in field trips to post-secondary institutes, worksites, businesses and hands-on workshops
    • Performs related duties as required

Required Degree Level: Bachelor's Degree

24 credit hours in the Content area

Passing the NC SBE Licensure Area Exam

Enroll in EPP (Educational Preparation Program)

Required Degree Level: Bachelor's, Associate, or Diploma RN

Examples of Related Degrees: Nursing

Required Years of Work Experience for the CTE Restricted route: 2 years within past 5 years

Examples of Related Work Experience: nursing, post?]secondary nursing instruction if clinical instruction is included in responsibilities

Required Credentials: Unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse prior to teaching

OR

Required Degree Level: Bachelor's, Associate

Examples of Related Degrees: Physical Therapy, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory, Dietetic, Nutrition, Nuclear Medicine, Physician Assistant, Physician, Athletic Training, Health Education, Respiratory Therapy, Histology, Occupational Therapy, Dentist, Dental Hygiene, Cardiovascular Technology, Emergency Medical Care, Radiology

Required Years of Work Experience for the CTE Restricted route: 2 years within past 5 years

Examples of Related Work Experience: health educator at health departments, schools, etc.; athletic trainer; physical therapist, occupational therapist; cardiovascular technologist; medical doctor

Required Credentials: Healthcare license representative of degree prior to teaching. Examples (not inclusive list): Health Education-CHES (Certified Health Education Specialist); Athletic Training-Certified Athletic Trainer from NATABOC; Physical Therapist-state level license; Medical Doctor-state level license; Respiratory Therapist-state level license; Paramedic-state level license; Dental Hygienist-state level license

OR

Required Degree Level: Bachelor's

Examples of Related Degrees: Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, Biology-Related Degrees (Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Toxicology, Structural Biology, Cellular Biology), Chemistry, Pathology, or Pharmacology if at least 6 semester hours in Microbiology, Genetics, Immunology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology

Required Years of Work Experience for the CTE Restricted route: 2 years within past 5 years

Examples of Related Work Experience: biotechnology, biomedical engineer, biomedical informatics, animal care technician/specialist,

quality assurance technician, clinical trials research associate, crime scene investigator, genetic counselor, microbiologist, science teacher.

Semester Hours Required for License: 18 Required Courses: 18 Semester Hours as specified by NC DPI.

  • Knowledge of current Health Science careers education instructional methods, as well as differentiated instruction based upon learning styles.
  • Knowledge and basic ability to use various health equipment and instruments use in health industry.
  • Knowledge of instructional techniques and inventory control principles and practices
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations regarding education and students, as well as relating to health education
  • Knowledge of physiology, health and nutrition, biology and biological functions, anatomy, hygiene, exercise, and best ways to promote physical and mental well-being
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed
  • Ability to organize and set up laboratory experiments

Physical Requirements: Because of the nature of the work much of the time is spent standing and moving around within the classroom/lab. The incumbent must be physically able to complete the duties of the job using appropriate equipment. Occasionally the employee will lift up to 50 lbs.
