Secondary Instructional Coach: Literacy and Reading

Description:

The Secondary Literacy Instructional Coach serves a vital role supporting teachers and students. The primary emphasis for this role is on increasing teacher capacity differentiating reading and writing instruction across the middle grades. The candidate will support building administrators, the Literacy Department Supervisor, content area teachers, and support personnel to ensure the delivery of quality literacy instruction to improve student achievement. The instructional coach will also share knowledge and expertise with all constituents through resources, modeling, coaching, and professional development. As needed, the coach may also assume primary intervention/teaching assignments, provide direct services to students who require reading intervention, and support school-based implementation of the district 6-12 English/Language Arts curriculum as defined in the district and school development and performance plans. The responsibilities required of this position include the following:
  • Provide ongoing, job-embedded professional learning and feedback to teachers on teaching and learning strategiesSupport literacy specialists with intervention and progress monitoring strategiesAnalyze and interpret district assessment data to identify student needs, monitor student progress, and assist teachers with differentiated instructionAdminister screening and diagnostic assessmentsParticipate in curriculum development and implementationTeach reading intervention classes to support students identified for Tier II/III intervention, model instruction, and build capacity for literacy instruction in the system.

The candidate must possess a strong knowledge base in literacy intervention and exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills. The candidate must also work collaboratively with colleagues to improve student reading and writing achievement.

Educational Background and Work Experience
  • Minimum of five (5) years successful teaching/literacy coaching experienceAbility to establish trust, maintain confidentiality, and respect the professional expertise of teachersAbility to analyze student assessment dataAbility to review and conduct instructional practice researchAbility to collaborate with teachers, administrators, and literacy specialists in multiple school settingsAbility to provide effective professional development to adult learners
Certification: Secondary English Language Arts certification (015), Remedial Reading certification (102), and Reading and Language Arts Consultant certification (097) preferred. Willingness to seek additional certification if needed for CT certification requirements
