Job Summary

This is technical work at the working supervisor level in planning, organizing, and coordinating the day-to-day operation of the District's school bus fleet including the inspection of buses for violation of state and local motor vehicle safety laws and ordinances. May schedule, assign, monitor, review, and evaluate the work of assigned subordinates. This is a senior level, stand-alone class.

1. Coordinates the operations of the District's school bus inspection programs.

2. Researches and maintains information regarding motor vehicle specifications, technical and mechanical requirements, recalls and safety bulletins, and provides this information to bus contractors and School Bus Inspectors.

3. Provides technical guidance and instruction to assigned staff and school bus contractors to include conducting workshops. Trains School Bus Inspectors. May schedule, assign, monitor, review, and evaluate the work of assigned employees.

4. Makes field inspections of school bus inspection facilities to determine compliance with prescribed regulations and takes required action on non-compliance.

5. Inspects school buses for violation of state and local motor vehicle safety laws and ordinances.

6. Conducts accident investigations. Maintains Transportation accident/incident database.

7. Analyzes contractor bus fleets for contract compliance.

8. Maintains inspection records, files and reports.

9. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications

Open Requirements: A four (4)- year combination of education, training, and experience in the repair, overhaul and/or inspection of motor vehicles which must have included at least one (1) year of automotive repair shop supervision or management. Experience with school buses and compliance with governmental regulations preferred.

Licensing/Certification/Registration: A Florida Department of Education School Bus Safety Inspector/Trainer Certification is required within 90 days of employment and must be maintained during employment. A valid Florida Class B CDL Driver's License is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.

NOTE: The probationary period for this class is one (1) year.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Knowledge of current, new, and proposed local, state, and federal school bus safety regulations, laws, and ordinances for school buses.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles, practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of District budget and purchasing policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of motor vehicle inspection techniques, methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of motor vehicle specifications, technical and mechanical requirements, and recall and safety bulletins
  • Skill in assessing, determining and taking action on violations of school bus safety and inspections.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software skills
  • Basic supervisory skills
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate the operations of school bus safety inspections.
  • Ability to schedule, assign, monitor, review and evaluate the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to develop and implement motor vehicle inspection policies and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain fleet-related files, records and reports.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and instruction to assigned staff.
  • Ability to read, understand and apply job-related laws, ordinances, rules and regulations; technical and motor vehicle manufacturer's manuals; and general work instructions
