CPS' Student Information Systems provide integrated systems for teachers to input access, analyze, and organize student attendance; grades; report cards; demographic information; assessment and achievement data; and instructional resources in support of individualized, group, and differentiated instruction. The SIS Business Analyst position involves supporting CPS' teacher-facing and grading-related enterprise systems, performing technical and non-technical operational activities; documenting system enhancements and configuration changes; and crafting instructional procedure notices which synthesize system features, functionality, and business processes. The Student Information Systems (SIS) Business Systems Analyst is responsible for working with district; network; and local stakeholders to ensure that configurations and functionality within the teacher-facing and grading-related functions of the enterprise-level student information systems support their respective educational strategies, operational requirements, and reporting needs. The SIS Business Analyst will participate in requirements gathering meetings and must be able to serve as a facilitator between technical and business personnel.

The SIS Business Analyst will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

  • Partner with the SIS Manager (Educators), SIS Senior Business Analyst, internal stakeholders, and external resources to analyze and document business requirements for the purpose of delivering and maintaining an optimal technological solution.

  • The SIS Business Analyst will also be required to be on call outside of the standard eight hour workday during critical times in the business cycle as defined by the SIS Manager.

  • Providing regular status updates to the SIS Senior Business Analyst.

  • Executing test scripts and scenarios to confirm that system functionality meets requirements

  • Working towards the timely remediation/resolution of technical issues that arise as a result of functional defects or hardware failure

  • Developing and maintaining training materials, and delivering training as needed upon the request of the SIS Manager, including face-to-face, recorded, and live webinars.

  • Communicating with ITS Teams regarding changes to business requirements or application configurations which directly affect end users.

  • Developing and documenting requirements for new reports or changes to existing reports.

  • Performing data analysis as required to facilitate issue resolution, report testing, data quality improvements, and system configuration.

  • Training and supporting end users and CPS' support structure on system functionality.

  • Supporting Teacher-facing enterprise functions including, but not limited to: Student Marks & Assignments, Transcripts, Curriculum, Assessments, Lesson and Unit Plans.



In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the SIS Business Analyst must possess the following qualifications:

  • Solid Verbal and Written Communications Skills: Effectively communicate with internal constituents and external partners; clearly and accurately document business requirements and system functionality

  • High Proficiency in Productivity Software including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations

  • Working Knowledge of SQL: Understanding database schema and developing queries

  • Working Knowledge of XML, HTML, XHTML: Understanding and modifying software code

  • Capable of quickly learning software and sharing that knowledge with others



Type of Education Required :

  • Minimum of College Bachelor's Degree



Type of Experience and Number of Years :

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience of software application support within CPS or equivalent



Residency Requirement:

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and must maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
