The Student Information Systems (SIS) Senior Application Systems Specialist is primarily responsible for the daily health of the SIS application suite through problem identification and problem solving. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to analyze, resolve issues and maintain hardware and software for Enterprise Applications and Services will be necessary to succeed in this position. The Sr. Application Systems Specialist is responsible for the resolution of technical issues that have been escalated from our level 3 support team members; a task which often requires direct coordination with external vendors and/or internal ITS teams. Understanding the functionality of the Student Information System software and how our district's teachers, principals, clerks, parents and students interact with it, is critical for one to excel in this position. Finally, the Sr. Application Systems Specialist is responsible for building and supporting local software environments (Linux and SQL Server) and keeping those environments up to date based on vendor upgrades and patches.

The Sr. Application Systems Specialist will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

  • Application Support responsibilities, including:

    • Provide fourth-level application support

    • Application troubleshooting and resolution

    • Vendor escalations (through ticketing process and followup)

  • Partner with Project Managers, ITS Infrastructure and Network Teams to ensure:

    • daily operations

    • plan new releases

    • actively monitor application health

  • Environment Maintenance responsibilities, including:

    • Environment build-outs

    • Training environments synchronization

    • Development and Quality Assurance (QA) environment maintenance

  • Systems Administration responsibilities, including:

    • Application installation/maintenance

    • Application upgrades

    • Server configuration/performance tuning

    • Interface management (approved Application Configuration changes)

    • Job schedule implementation/maintenance

  • On-Call responsibilities (rotating), including:

    • Report any outages (SIS Applications) to environment owners

    • Attend Wednesday ITS Change Advisory Board (CAB) Review

    • Respond to any failed job/maintenance/server notifications

    • Provide Application Management Support for any weekend work

    • Respond to Solarwind



In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Sr. Application Systems Specialist must possess the following qualifications:

  • Effectively communicate and interact daily with colleagues to move issues and projects forward

  • Strong technical Support and assistance with hardware, software, networking

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to analyze, resolve issues and maintain hardware and software for Enterprise Applications and Services

  • Work well in a team as well as individually on assigned duties

  • Ability to clearly present technical information

  • Ability to learn and adapt to new applications and services quickly to support the organization



Type of Education Required :

  • Minimum of College Bachelor's Degree (IT concentration preferred)



Type of Experience and Number of Years :

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience of infrastructure (server) management or equivalent knowledge of CPS operations



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Working knowledge of LINUX (installation and configuration of software, monitoring performance, etc.)

  • Working knowledge of Windows Server (installation and configuration of software, monitoring performance, etc.)

  • Enterprise Application Support (end to end knowledge from server to application in order to address any issues); Apache/Tomcat, Wildfly Application Platform experience sought

  • Working knowledge of SQL Database (RDMS) (specifically Microsoft SQL) and the SQL Query Language is required

  • Basic knowledge of Java and understanding of stack traces is required

  • Knowledge of Code Repository use such as GIT is preferred



Residency Requirement:

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and must maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
