Overview:
Founded in 1647, Boston Public Schools (BPS) is one of the oldest public school districts in the country. With more than 55,000 students from 139 countries, over 9,000 employees, and an annual budget of $1 billion, the BPS is the largest, most diverse district in Massachusetts.

Currently, BPS has 125 schools with a total of 125 kitchen sites overseen by the Department of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS). Approximately 22,000 breakfasts and 37,000 lunches are served daily at no cost to the student. The department manages a budget of nearly $40 million.

The City of Boston has launched My Way Cafe, a transformative project at Boston Public Schools, completely re-thinking how school food is procured, prepared and delivered. This Food and Nutrition program of the future will showcase fresh, nutritious meals prepared and cooked directly in each school. The My Way Cafe program completion at all locations is anticipated by 2022 (total of 125 sites).

General Description:
We are seeking a Nutrition Manager who will work with the Procurement Manager and Director of Finance to oversee menus for all programs. This includes menu development for all elementary, middle and high school students at My Way Cafe, cafeteria and satellite locations, as well as for afterschool and summer meals. These menus must comply with USDA, HUSSC, and Alliance for Healthier Generation standards, as well as all other state and federal guidelines, and must fit the operational capacity of Boston schools. The manager is also responsible for coordinating, planning and keeping records of special diets. In addition, he/she oversees grant-funded programs such as: Child and Adult Care Food Program [CACFP] Summer Meal Program, Farm to School, and the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program and initiatives such as Salad Bars in Schools.

He/She will maintain and update relevant BPS standard operating procedures and make recommendations for improvements or establish new procedures. The manager is responsible for being current on all regulations and industry best practices and advocating for updates for FNS, ensuring all central office and field staff are appropriately trained.

This position has a key role in smart business management and a responsibility for building student meal participation and community engagement. The individual must build and maintain positive working relationships, and create an environment of collaboration with all team members, all BPS departments and contracted goods and services.

This individual should be a self-starter with the ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks and projects and provide exemplary customer service to all stakeholders.

Job Responsibilities:

Menu Development
  • Oversee development of all menus and nutrient analysis to ensure compliance at all times with departmental, state and USDA regulations.
  • Evaluate and refine recipes and procedures.
  • Actively seek student and parent input for menu planning/recipe development and measure customer satisfaction on a regular basis.
  • Calculate menu cost and maintain within budgetary constraints.
  • Disseminate menus, recipes and forms for production records.
  • Develop special diets and maintain appropriate records for students with special dietary needs.
Personnel and Program Management
  • Supervise the School Nutrition Program Coordinator.
  • Oversee summer meal program, after-school meal programs (CACFP), and Fresh Fruit & Vegetable program, ensuring compliance with all regulations.
  • Develop and maintain department production records and procedures.
  • Work with Finance Director to ensure budgetary information and meal claims are submitted in a timely fashion,and that all financial requirements are met.
  • Seek out and develop grants based on departmental strategic plan.

Communications and Training
  • Work with outside agencies and partners to improve community awareness of school nutrition operations, goals and initiatives.
  • Serve as a liaison for departmental programs with students and parents.
  • Develop and maintain training programs for all personnel related to menus, production and products.
  • Ensure that instruction, training and site visits are completed appropriately by the Field Operations Manager and staff.
  • Instruct employees on food purchasing, preparation and serving techniques for students with special diets.
  • Coordinate volunteer and intern opportunities.

Professional Development
  • Attend continuing education programs to maintain Registered Dietitian certification.
  • Visit sites regularly to gain an understanding of operations to inform menu planning.

Other
  • Perform other duties as assigned by manager or designee.

Qualifications - Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Food and Nutrition, Dietetics, Food Systems, or a related area from an accredited college or university
  • Registered and licensed Dietitian
  • Serve Safe Certification
  • Three to five years of experience managing food service, school meals or nutrition programs
  • Experience in a managerial or supervisory role
  • Working knowledge of quality food production, specifications, procurements, contracts, and service and supervisory practices
  • Knowledge of federal school food service programs
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, particularly in translating nutrition concepts and information into easy-to-interpret, actionable reports, presentations, and findings
  • Excellent analytical ability
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Powerpoint, Word)
  • Demonstrated ability to advise and negotiate comfortably with individuals at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands
  • Successful experience working in a team-oriented environment

Qualifications - Preferred:
  • Master's degree in Business Administration, Food Services Management or Nutrition
  • Member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Five to ten years of experience managing food service, school meals or nutrition programs
  • Three years in a managerial/supervisory position in food services in a large institution or school system
  • Experience working with point-of-sale systems, preferably WebSmartt
  • Experience with nutritional analysis systems such as Nutrikids

TERMS: Managerial, 12 months, Tier C. City of Boston residency is required.

NOTE: Managerial employees work between July 1st and June 30th each year. The work-year will include the 180 days in which school is in session. This position is subject to the City of Boston residency requirement.
