Student Equity Advocates will be assigned by the Office of Equity to consistently support designated groups of historically marginalized students across secondary schools by increasing their exposure to positive role models, extended learning, post-secondary options and access to social, cultural, and identity enrichment. Student Equity Advocates will work independently and as a collective, as well as in conjunction with school-community stakeholders, to strengthen students' sense of belonging and agency, relationships with their peers and community, and investment in education that will foster current and future success and life-readiness.

Salary :
Support Exempt Salary Schedule, Level 1 (starting at $52, 447/year)

Qualifications :
Candidates must be enthusiastic about the fundamental goal of advancing student success and eliminating racial disparities in an urban public school district. In addition, we are seeking candidates with a(n):

1. Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent work experience preferred

2. Ability to quickly establish credibility and build productive relationships with multiple stakeholders including students, families, school-based staff, central office staff, universities, employers, and community partners

3. Ability to perceive and examine the role of race and racial identity in society and schools and analyze the effects of power and oppression

4. Knowledge of the histories and contemporary social issues of historically marginalized groups in and out of school, with particular attention to the socio-economic contexts of families in Pittsburgh

5. Experience in mentoring and youth development from an assets-based perspective using a growth mindset, with the ability to draw from one's own and others' experiences to provide appropriate guidance for developing youth

6. Adaptive problem-solver who is results-oriented, with a track record of managing multiple priorities and completing tasks on time and within budget

7. Excellent verbal and written communication skills

8. Technologically proficient, with the ability to work with MS Office suite of programs expected

Essential Job Functions :
1. Develop, facilitate and document a regular schedule of school-based and off-site mentoring sessions, both formally and informally, to students 1-on-1 and in groups with the goal of raising students' cultural resilience and collectivism.

2. Implement identity development and rites of passage activities designed to develop students' cultural competence, help them examine the social forces shaping their experiences, and equip them with tools to navigate barriers to success.

3. Provide school leadership and support staff with culturally sustaining strategies for closing opportunity gaps that impede the success of historically marginalized students.

4. Provide supplemental culturally relevant experiential learning opportunities beyond the classroom.

5. Engage students, their families, and their communities year-round, through formal and informal activities, to stimulate and support collective impact and to help students utilize the resources available within their social networks.

6. Keep record of student participation, student information, and work/activities accomplished.

7. Set measurable goals, monitor benchmarks, celebrate milestones and document evidence of student growth; provide effective feedback and reflection.

8. Be prepared to support equity training for central office and school-based staff.

9. Other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
