KIPP, or the Knowledge is Power Program, is a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools in educationally underserved communities.  Nearly 100,000 students attend one of the 224 KIPP schools that operate in 20 states and the District of Columbia.  KIPP Philadelphia Schools Public Schools (KPPS) is a part of the national KIPP network and currently has six schools, serving approximately 1,600 students in North and West Philadelphia.

The mission of KIPP Philadelphia Public Schools (KPPS) is to develop the character, knowledge, and skills of our students so they will succeed in college, giving them the freedom to shape their futures and positively affect their communities. Our vision is to achieve our mission at critical mass – a cluster of schools in Philadelphia – thereby reinvigorating public education in this city through the performance of our students and the leadership of our educators.  Within the next seven years, KIPP programming in Philadelphia will include ten schools, over 4,400 students, over 370 employees, and an operating budget greater than 60MM.
 

Position Overview  

Reporting to the School Leader, the Math Instructional Coach (MIC) is a member of the high school leadership team at KIPP DuBois Collegiate Academy (KDCA). The MIC directly coaches, supports, manages and evaluates a portfolio of predominantly math and science teachers across the building, ensuring that teachers possess the instructional skills, content knowledge, mindset and motivation necessary to achieve breakthrough student growth and achievement and to contribute positively to the larger school community.
 
Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure all direct reports have clarity on the expectations of and performance goals attached to their role
  • Observe teachers regularly, utilizing the KPPS Teaching Rubric to share clear, concise, data-based positive and adjusting feedback that moves their craft forward
  • Leverage a variety of high impact teacher development techniques to move teacher practice forward, including (but not limited to): reviewing/analyzing student data and work, co-planning lessons, modeling and practicing specific teaching moves, reviewing upcoming content, and implementing real-time classroom feedback
  • Lead evaluation conversations throughout the year, sharing a clear, holistic assessment of their performance to date in terms of student outcomes, teaching skills, and core values
  • Develop deep expertise of all KPPS instructional approaches, curricula, resources, assessments and data tools
  • Design and lead staff professional development, including but not limited to workshops, content teams, data step backs and planning meetings
  • Actively participate and engage in leadership team meetings, supporting strategy and problem-solving
  • Actively participate and engage in monthly regional leadership professional development sessions, school-based equity professional development, and 1-1 coaching work with manager
  • Support a strong, positive staff and student culture at the school
  • Serve as a model of KIPP Philadelphia’s core values (Children First, Cultural Competence, Ownership, Community) at all times
  • Understand, implement and model school-wide student culture systems and protocols (including during arrival, dismissal, transitions; in common spaces, classrooms) that ensure all students feel affirmed, challenged and valued every day
  • Build strong relationships and maintain strong lines of communication with teachers, colleagues, students and families
  • Lead and help execute school initiatives including but not limited to, annual planning for the coming year, implementation of new focus areas
  • Other duties as assigned by the School Leader

Qualifications
Strong candidates for this position will demonstrate an unwavering focus on student growth and achievement and a record of success. Additional qualifications include:

  • At least 2 years of teaching experience in a high-performing school environment
  • At least 1 year of experience directly coaching teachers
  • Strong content knowledge in high school mathematics strongly preferred, strong Algebra knowledge required
  • Demonstrated academic results
  • Belief that teachers are the primary drivers of student growth and achievement
  • Belief in the potential of all children to grow, learn and achieve
  • Possesses a personal “why” – articulates and demonstrates a commitment to and passion for working in urban communities with underserved students and families
  • Ability to push staff while inspiring and motivating them
  • Has a clear vision for strong, rigorous, affirming instructional practices
  • Has a high bar for teachers and students
  • Takes ownership for outcomes, takes initiative to achieve results
  • Demonstrates high degree of professionalism, discretion, maturity
  • Willingness to work towards Pennsylvania State certification if not currently held

 KIPP Philadelphia Schools prefers the following qualifications:

  • Pennsylvania Certification (I or II)
  • Masters in Education/Teaching or content area
