Reporting to the Deputy Chief of High Schools in the Office of Network Support, the Deputy Chief of Small High Schools provides oversight, planning, and management for CPS' small schools. The candidate will strategically support and guide principals who are leading small schools.

This candidate will also monitor and assess small school strategy design and implementation.

The Deputy Chief of Small High Schools is expected to successfully oversee and/or perform the following responsibilities:

  • Manage the transformation of small high schools to bring about dramatic improvement in student achievement;

  • In collaboration with the Network Chiefs, assess academic, social emotional, culture/climate, attendance, fiscal, and human capital needs;

  • Provide targeted coaching support; and, conduct regular formal and informal instructional observations;

  • Design and deliver High School Collaborative professional learning opportunities for principals that are focused on building their capacity as school leaders and improving student academic proficiency;

  • Serve as liaison to Deputy Chief of High Schools; monitor schools' systems to improve academic, SEL, culture/climate, fiscal, graduation, and human capital indicators of success;

  • Provide support to Principals to enhance effective implementation of Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and behavioral health supports;

  • Provide ad-hoc operational support to Principals and Network Chiefs (e.g. escalated inquiries, advocate for overall support, etc.);

  • Work collaboratively with central office departments/staff to support effective small high school learning community, implementing a strategic plan to dramatically increase college and career readiness;

  • As a representative of the Network Chiefs, demonstrate a high level of moral imperative to work in the best interest of children. Demonstration of high levels of instructional expertise, integrity, honesty, credibility, and courage to make difficult yet necessary decisions is a must.



Type of Education & Licensure Required:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field; Master's degree in Education preferred

  • Valid Principal endorsement issued by the Illinois State Board of Education (or out-of-state equivalent) preferred



Type of Experience Required:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience within a complex educational organization is essential

  • School leadership experience required preferably principal experience with urban youth and/or coaching, teaching, and mentoring educators for a minimum of three (3) years

  • Demonstrated experience with small school strategy implementation and design



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Possess the ability to assist the Network Chiefs in articulating a vision, set high standards, and effectively guide schools and principals to realize high expectations for all students by setting actionable, measurable goals and seeing them through to completion.

  • Is an expert in leadership development and instructional leadership. Able to coach principals to excellence, build capacity of instructional leadership teams, and develop meaningful and high impact professional community for school leaders.

  • Is a strong communicator; speaking, listening, and writing.

  • Possess professional and strategic planning capabilities, including the ability to establish long-term vision and goals, and the ability to align and manage activities toward execution of identified goals.

  • Strong leadership and team building skills, i.e., ability to develop high performing teams united around a clear vision for serving schools and achieving student success.

  • Is knowledgeable of operations, management and organizational design and uses this knowledge to assist Chief of Schools to ensure improved student outcomes.

  • Builds collaborative relationships with a wide variety of constituent groups, including external partnerships, to ensure the entire system operates in the most effective manner possible to support school and principal needs.

  • Ability to define problems, analyze data, and outline valid conclusions and action steps.

  • Possess a track record of success as demonstrated by superior academic and professional achievement.



Residency Requirement:

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and must maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
