Reports to : Deputy Director, Food and Nutrition Services, Boston Public Schools

OVERVIEW:

Founded in 1647, Boston Public Schools (BPS) is the oldest public school district in the country. With approximately 57,000 students from over 114 different countries, nearly 8,000 employees, and an annual budget of $973 million, BPS is the largest district in Massachusetts and one of the most diverse as well.

Currently BPS has 124 schools utilizing three food service delivery models. Forty six (46) schools have full service kitchens with full time cafeteria managers and subordinate staff. Seventy eight (78) schools are satellite kitchen sites receiving meals from an outside vendor, contracted by BPS. In the 2017-2018 school year four schools participated in a pilot program introducing a new model called "My Way Café". In the 2018-2019 school year this pilot model will be expanded to an additional 26 schools. The My Way Cafe model is supported by a Central Distribution Center.

JOB OVERVIEW:
The Culinary Trainer for the MyWayCafe will supervise and participate in the development and implementation of training programs and materials related to food service management and operations of defining the deconstructed menu. Additionally the Trainer will discuss the current updates and progress regarding menus, training materials and training schedule.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop a schedule for "daily stand-up" meetings to brainstorm ideas and suggestions.
  • Discuss new job techniques, recipes developed, issues on new and existing concerns and ask for suggestions about how to address the issues.
  • Supervise and participate in training programs for the MyWayCafe
    • Plan, develop, and implement food service training and staff development programs in areas such as deconstruction of menus, plan-o-grams, ordering, inventory, food safety, customer service and profit and loss
  • Conducts needs analyses, develops curriculum and plans, and selects appropriate means of presentation to meet the needs of trainees.
  • Prepares and maintains records related to completed training sessions, provides certificates of completion, etc.
  • Updates training activities in regard to changes in procedures, standards, and legal requirements.
  • Weekly: Ensure team is aptly prepared to execute the menu scheduled (attached) as planned. E-mail me on what was discussed, resolutions, etc. by next day if I am absent from these meetings.

EXPECTATIONS:
  • Manage supply inventory for upcoming on- and off-campus events
  • Maintain methodology/process for tracking available inventory
  • Inform appropriate staff when supplies are running low in order to replenish supplies before they are needed
  • Monitor supply delivery to ensure timely ordering and receipt of supplies for events
  • Compile event status reports for the group on a quarterly basis
  • Ensure data contained in the reports is 100% accurate
  • Deliver reports to the group no later than 2 weeks after each quarter ends
  • Monitor expenditures against events budget
  • Update supervisor bi-weekly on expense activity versus budget
  • Alert staff when their expenses are close to the budget levels
  • Establish a process or routine, intentional about consistent prioritization of the workload as necessary.
  • Review other staff processes in order to assess and revamp, best practices.

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:
  • High School Diploma/ GED
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to multitask and prioritize daily tasks;
  • Demonstrates strong attention to detail and ability to analyze and solve problems quickly and accurately;
  • Ability to work independently with a keen sense of follow-through;
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills;
  • Experience working effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong commitment to work quality;
  • Ability to work with, analyze and communicate analysis of large data sets;
  • Able to coordinate and work effectively with diverse staff;
  • Able to work in a team oriented environment;
  • Ability to provide accurate and efficient customer service;
  • Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office products (e.g. Excel, Word, and PowerPoint), and internet applications.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment

QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED:
  • Bachelor's Degree or 5 years of related experience including general knowledge of FNS;
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish;
  • Previous experience in urban education departments;
  • Familiarity with large complex unionized environment;
  • Willingness to take on leadership role and "go the extra mile".

TERMS: Managerial, Tier B; This position is subject to the City of Boston Residency requirement.
