Behavior Specialist Full-time Limited Term Std (Grant) Teacher Ldrshp Required

BEHAVOR SPECIALIST (Site)

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

Under the general direction of the School Administrator, the Behavior Specialist supports the WCSD Strategic Plan goals and objectives related to general and special education student behavior and student learning by embedded, on-site professional development and coaching to build the capacity of educators which will ensure all students are able to mitigate behavior in order to access instruction. The Behavior Specialist will support students and work directly with educators in general schools. Where appropriate, data review of behaviors will occur on three times per year with teachers to ensure progress of goals and academic outcomes. In addition, Behavior Specialists will work with school IAT teams to ensure goals are effectively developed and implemented with fidelity. (MTSS)

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Sets high expectations for students, staff, parents, and self: develops and implements on site, ongoing training for staff in the area of positive behavioral supports, Social Emotional Learning, Trauma Informed Practice, Restorative Practice and behavior analysis, regarding specialized instructional methods and best practices from a recognized research base; helps teachers understand and apply teaching styles that complement the varied learning and behavioral styles of students; encourages students and staff alike to set high personal goals and offers encouragement and support in the achievement of those goals; works to build skills and abilities within the classroom to functionally assess, collect and graph behavioral data, and write effective behavior plans; provides in-service opportunities for parents regarding effective behavioral management in specialized cases; creates and/or assists in functional behavior assessments as well as behavior intervention plans; develops specialized instructional methods with teachers; observes students in a general education setting and provides feedback to staff in all school settings in their efforts to functionally assess and write effective behavior plans, maintain records, materials, equipment and other supplies; remains current with approaches, methodology and research in the field to foster professional growth and educationally related practices; coordinates student case staffing weekly, may serve as site MTSS Coordinator; recruits, selects, assigns, and organizes staff in such a way as to assure the greatest potential for the accomplishment of the school's mission

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

  • Education: Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in an area of special education or related field from an accredited college or university; A Master's Degree in School Administration or currently enrolled in an administrative credential program-highly desired;

  • AND
  • Five (5) years teaching special education or related field, such as counseling. Advanced training in behavior, related experience and specialized knowledge of assessment and prescriptive techniques.

  • AND
  • Highly Effective/Effective or Satisfactory evaluations in the last five (5) years.

  • Knowledge of : Washoe County School District Strategic Plan; Nevada content and Common Core State Standards; Basic behavior analytic principles and application; Positive Behavior Intervention Supports. Functional behavior analysis and implementation of behavior plans; knowledge of the varied characteristics of at-risk students, and assessments used to diagnose students with behavioral concerns; files and records management, office procedures, and basic computer literacy. Understanding of Special Education Law, including IDEA and Sate of Nevada requirements;

    Skill at : Communicating effectively both orally and in writing; working collaboratively with certified goals and objectives for students with behavioral concerns; Group and 1-1 training/coaching and proven ability to effectively collaborate with school teams and individuals; mastery of effective positive behavior intervention plan development, implementation and monitoring; ability to train teachers and staff in functional behavior analytics and positive behavior intervention supports; using counseling techniques to defuse potentially stressful/explosive situation with students, staff and/or parents.

    WHEN ASSIGNED TO A SPECIAL EDUCATION POSITION THE DUTIES ALSO INCLUDE:

    Knowledge of: Knowledge of the principles and methods used in teaching exceptional children; state and federal laws pertaining to special education; the influence of social, physical, and psychological factors in instructional situations; high yield instructional strategies, and inclusion practices. Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis. Specialized knowledge and experience working with students with disabilities in the following areas preferred:

    * Autism Spectrum Disorder; Social Resource, Strategies program

    * Behavior and Social Intervention programs

    * Comprehensive Life Skills; Low Incidence

    Licenses/Certi ficates : Possession of a valid Nevada teaching license.

    Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year.


    Additional Job Information:
    This is a Limited Term position ending June 2020. This position is grant funded and contingent upon continued funding. At the conclusion of this position, the incumbent will be eligible to participate in the exclusive transfer process and overage process in accordance with the certified negotiated agreement.

    The Washoe County School District pays an additional legislatively-designated amount to the Public Employees Retirement System on behalf of the employee for retirement benefits. No retirement contribution is made by the employee.
