Purpose and Scope
Performs a variety of routine system-wide and departmental audits for the Shelby County Schools (SCS). Assists experienced auditors on complex audit projects. Plans and performs financial, operational, information systems and regulatory compliance audits. Evaluates audit findings and develops recommendations for corrective actions to remediate the audit findings.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Examines assigned areas to determine the nature of the operations, systems and/or regulatory
  2. Documents the processes and procedures observed in the examination with written narratives, flowcharts, etc.
  3. Identifies critical system-wide and departmental areas and recommends all areas to be audited.
  4. Determines the approach and scope of the audit by conducting statistical sampling and using audit software to plan procedures for the audit.
  5. Audits assigned areas.
  6. Reviews and analyzes findings as a basis to formulate an objective opinion on the adequacy and effectiveness of the operations, systems, and/or regulatory activities under review.
  7. Identifies problems or potential problems found in the audit. Reports findings to the senior auditor or audit manager in a timely manner.
  8. Evaluates audit findings. Makes recommendations on the development and/or revision of operational policies and procedures for corrective actions to remediate the audit findings.
  9. Prepares audit findings, recommendations and reports for review and approval from the audit manager or audit director.
  10. Discusses findings and recommendations with management for the area under review. Explains the remedial operational policies and procedures necessary to correct the problems found in the audit.
  11. Participates as member of formal exit conferences with management for the area under review.
  12. Reviews follow up procedures on corrective action planned or taken by management for the area under review as a result of audit findings and recommendations to ensure proper implementation.
  13. Conducts all activities in compliance with established Shelby County Schools (SCS) audit policies and procedures. Follows federal and state laws, professional standards, equal employment and nondiscrimination policies.
  14. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed


Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Information Systems, Economics or a related field OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience totaling four (4) years. One (1) year of professional experience in auditing, accounting, information systems, or related field preferred. Professional credentials such as Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), or Certified Government Auditing Professional (CGAP) preferred.

Degree Equivalency Formula :
Bachelor's Degree = 4 years plus required years of experience.
Master's Degree = 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master's degrees are required, years for Bachelor's Degrees must be included.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of auditing and/or accounting practices, information systems and/or regulatory matters
  • Ability to successfully execute and complete audits, investigations and special reviews under stringent time deadlines. Handles multiple priorities.
  • Effective analytical, judgment, and organizational skills including attention to detail, accuracy and thoroughness. Looks for ways to improve quality and efficiency.
  • Requires the ability to maintain confidentiality with regards to work assignments and office projects
  • Works with integrity.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships, and deal effectively with SCS staff and management.
  • Proficient skills using personal computers, Microsoft Office and other related software applications needed to support audit work


Physical Requirements and Working Environment
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical Demands : Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment; must be able to use hands and fingers
Unavoidable Hazards : The position is exposed to no unusual environmental hazards.

Sensory (ADA) Requirements : The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities.
