DPS Migrant Education Program Objectives:

- Address, reduce, and eliminate barriers to the academic success of migrant students

- Provide services and supports from district, metro migrant program, and community

- Increase graduation rate of migrant students

- Increase the number of migrant students that access and complete post-secondary education

- Increase the number of youth participating in educational leadership opportunities

Essential Functions and Objectives:

- The successful candidate will travel from school to school in order to meet with migrant families on a consistent basis in order to provide direct and indirect educational services. Some home visits may also be necessary depending on factors relating to students' family and level of educational engagement.

Liaison will be responsible for:

- Meeting bi-weekly with migrant students to monitor grades, attendance, and other educational concerns and providing direct social-emotional support
- Providing direction and guidance for students and families in need of educational services
- Provide leadership to improve the educational experience of migrant students
- Mentoring students to achieve educational goals and helping them build social-emotional skills that will serve them in all aspects of their lives
- Assisting students and their families to create a system of supports that provide an environment conducive to the holistic growth of the student while also promoting self-advocacy
- Connecting students and families with school staff as well as services and resources found within the school district and the larger community
- Providing opportunities within the program, school, and community to expose students to a variety of positive, enriching, learning, and cultural experiences
- Collaborating with the program manager in the coordination of educational and community services for students and families
- Collaborating with district support staff on behalf of migrant students and families to remove barriers, support child's education, and act as a liaison between family and school
- Documenting and maintaining all required records and files reported to CDE, DPS, and the Regional MEP office

Knowledge, Experience, & Other Qualifications:

Familiarity with educational settings:

Understands and has professional experience with the elementary, middle, and high school settings, as well as how schools and school districts address the multiple needs of students and families. Experience as a mentor, coach, or advocate a plus

Communicates Effectively:

Clearly conveys ideas, tasks, and challenges in a manner that engages others and helps them understand. Shares information. Listens and involves others

Language Skills:

Bilingual skills in Burmese and English- both spoken and written


Decision Making/Judgment:

Highly motivated to work independently and deal with diverse situations during the workday. Recognizes problems and responds; addresses root cause of issues, gathers information, sorts through complex situations, seeks input from others; makes timely decisions, can make difficult decisions, uses consensus when possible, and communicates decisions to others

Understanding of Immigrant/Migrant Experience

Demonstrates understanding of the historical and systemic challenges faced by migrant and immigrant communities and the challenges that have limited or prevented this population from accessing educational and professional opportunities in our society. Must have ability to work with students and families from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds as well as strong empathy for at-risk populations

Transportation:

Possess reliable means of transportation to make home/school visits. Must have a current and valid Colorado driver's license and vehicle, as well a knowledge of Denver Public Schools locations and ability to travel to DPS and other sites throughout the city

- Bachelor's degree
