We appreciate your interest in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Substitute Teacher position. CMS relies heavily on substitute teachers to continue high quality instruction during periods when staff members are absent or on an approved leave. Substitute teachers serve on an as needed basis and are not eligible to earn leave, participate in the retirement system, or receive/purchase health benefits. Substitute teachers for CMS do not qualify for unemployment benefits because they have a temporary status with CMS. Substitutes are not allowed to work in another capacity within CMS in addition to the substitute position.
The Substitute Teacher position is posted the 15th of the month in January, March, May, July, September and November and will close once there has been a sufficient number of applicants. This will allow the HR Department to begin the hiring process in a timely manner. When the position is posted, it can be located online with our Non-Instructional positions under the title of "Non-Certified" or "Certified Substitute Teacher."

The minimum requirements for a Non-Certified Substitute Teacher within Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are… Applicant must be 21 years of age or older AND hold an Associate's Degree or 48 semester hours of college credit courses with a C or higher.
For the 2019-20 school year, CMS has partnered with Kelly Educational Staffing (KES) to fill teacher absences and teacher vacancies with substitutes in all Title I funded schools. Substitutes that work for KES can only work in teacher-level positions in Title I schools. Substitutes that work for CMS can only work in non-Title I schools.
