Bachelor's degree in nutrition or food service and/or Dietetics; Registered Dietitian Credential required; or any combination of experience and training that would provide the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
  • Thorough knowledge of child nutrition.
  • Ability to modify planned menus for various medical conditions.
  • Thorough knowledge of institutional food service practices and federal guidelines governing the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.
  • Culinary skills needed for recipe development.
  • Ability to multitask appropriately, prioritize, be detail-oriented, and be goal-driven.
  • Thorough knowledge of merchandising techniques to market school nutrition programs.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and communicate courteously and effectively with food service personnel, administrators, students, parents, and the school community.
  • Knowledge of foods and nutrition, food cost accounting, menu management, food values, and the nutritional content of food.
  • Ability to plan and develop training programs for food service managers and staff.
  • Ability to speak to large and small groups.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook.
  • Willingness to learn and assume responsibility.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be sensitive and responsive to diverse cultural and ethnic groups.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, sit for extended periods; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

BASIC FUNCTION/NATURE OF WORK:

Plans, develops, and executes menu planning for the School Division. Designs specific menus for all grade groupings and production sites. Modifies planned menus as needed for students with special needs and provides guidance for the school staff on meeting the needs of the students on special diets. Responsible for ensuring compliance with USDA menu patterns. Manages and maintains the data in the ingredient item file, recipe file, POS item file; and food production plans for the "Back of the House" food service functions. Prepare bid specifications in collaboration with the Purchasing Department to secure vendors to provide needed food to school locations. Manages food service contracts, coordinates vendor delivery schedules, and oversees vendor performance.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/ILLUSTRATIVE EX OF WORK:


  • Works collaboratively with all stakeholders in Providing A World-Class Education .

  • Develops menus for breakfast and lunch for all grade grouping and production sites based on required USDA menu plans, nutritional analysis, financial guidance, sales data, the diversity of the student population and their dietary needs, the personnel and equipment available, and guest feedback.

  • Coordinates the testing and evaluation of current menu items and possible new products with regards to specification compliance, quality standards, and student acceptance and satisfaction.

  • Collaborates with staff on the development and testing of new recipes.

  • Promotes the nutritional and economic advantages of school meals.

  • Develops menus for SACC snack, SOL Snacks, Summer Feeding, and other programs as needed.

  • Collaborates with school community groups.

  • Evaluates opportunities, on an ongoing basis, for extending programs to address nutritional needs of the school and community.

  • Works within the school community to inform and advocate for the school nutrition program.

  • Develops and delivers presentations about nutrition and/or the School Food and Nutrition Services (SFNS) programs to students, faculty, or parent groups.

  • Plans and promotes activities for National School Lunch Week, National School Breakfast Week, Child Nutrition Employee Appreciation Week, National Nutrition Month, Food Day, Farm to School Week, and other recognized celebrations.

  • Provides information about the SFNS program to groups allied with Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS), such as higher education institutions, parent-teacher organizations, school board and principal organizations, dietetic associations, medical organizations, and any others in the community with an interest in the well-being of children.

  • Maintains current nutrition and ingredient information on each menu item utilized in the school division, compiling and disseminating the information on the School Division website for school nurses, parents, and students.

  • Collaborates with food service managers on the menu planning, menu substitutions, product problems, delivery problems, etc.

  • Order USDA Commodities ensuring the Division receives the best value for the funding available.

  • Communicates with all stakeholders in the School Division about the contribution of the SFNS programs to the educational performance of students.

  • Conducts and analyzes surveys regarding stakeholder satisfaction with the Office of School Food and Nutrition Services.

  • Studies participation trends in the food service programs within PWCS and works with schools performing poorly to identify and address the root cause for such.

  • Possesses strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Completes other duties as assigned.



SALARY:
Hiring Range: $54,468 - $76,766/year ($29.05 - $40.94/hour)

DAYS: 250

FULL TIME/PART TIME: Full Time
