Great Oaks Legacy Charter School is seeking an experienced Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant (LDTC) - Network SPED Coordinator (Middle School) to coordinate Special Education services and support across our middle school campuses.

The Great Oaks Legacy Charter School is a high-performing, innovative charter public school in Newark NJ, serving over 1600 students from Pre-K to 12th grade on five campuses across the city. Our mission is to prepare public school students for success in college. Great Oaks Legacy students aspire to be some of the highest performing students in the country.

We have high academic and behavioral expectations for our students. Our students, for example, are encouraged to take multiple AP classes before they graduate. We pair rigorous curriculum and teaching with intense personal support from teachers, tutors, and staff. The school's mission is to prepare our students for college success through several key elements:

Small school – Grade-level cohorts of less 100 students allow each student to feel known and cared for. Our focus is on a sense of community and relationship building with families and students.
  • More time on task – Longer school days than traditional schools. Weekend sessions and summer school for students who are struggling.
  • High expectations – Rigorous, differentiated, college-preparatory coursework from K-12. Advanced Placement and real college courses for all juniors and seniors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant (LDTC) - Network SPED Coordinator (Middle School) provides comprehensive educational evaluation services as a coordinator of the Child Study Teams across our middle school campuses.

The LDTC-Network SPED Coordinator (Middle School) is responsible for overseeing the identification, diagnosis, (re)evaluation of students in need of special services and the delivery of quality academic services and programs. The LDTC-Network SPED Coordinator (Middle School) is a consultant to classroom teachers and leaders, assisting the instructional staff in an understanding of the needs of students with disabilities and recommending and demonstrating techniques, strategies, and materials so that every student makes academic gains in preparation for college.

  • Provide a full range of services in the identification and diagnosis of perceptual and learning disabilities, case management and in the monitoring of appropriate educational services and programs.Conduct testing/assessments for tri-annual and initial testing/assessments.Assist instructional staff and Child Study Team members in understanding the needs of students with disabilities and provide PD for teachers and staff as needed.Recommend and demonstrate techniques, strategies,and materials so students meet or exceeds curriculum standards.Serve as the liaison between students and other professionals to provide a coordinated educational program, progress (goal data) monitoring).


In addition, the LDTC-Network SPED Coordinator (Middle School) is expected to:

  • Drive student achievement for students receiving special education servicesParticipate in the evaluation, classification and placement of students with special needsAssess academic proficiency and learning characteristics of students referred to the child study team for evaluation and interprets the findings in written reports and informal conferencesAssist in the development and coordination of appropriate individualized education plans for students requiring special education and/or related servicesEnsure special education documents are implemented with fidelity across all middle school campusesParticipate in the ongoing assessment of academic achievement and educational placement of studentsConsult with classroom teachers, administrators, and families regarding special instructional methods and/or materials necessary to meet the specific needs of individual studentsProvide ongoing communication with teachers and administrators that strengthens the support systems for students receiving special education servicesKeep up-to-date in with current regulations governing the education of students with disabilitiesParticipate in the development and delivery of in-service programs and parent/family seminars related to learning disabilities and effective teaching methodsWork to keep the school community informed of the special education program and the role of the child study teamSupport case management and maintain appropriate case recordsMaintain professional competence through in-service education and other professional growth activitiesSupport all duties required by administrative code, state and federal laws and school policyPerform additional duties as part of the Great Oaks Legacy team.
