SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under general direction of the Chief Ombudsman and Strategies Officer and direct supervision of the MTSS Coordintaor, the MTSS/SEL specialist assists in the development, coordination, and implementation of MTSS and SEL at school sites. Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (Response to Intervention (RTI) and Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS), a problem-solving framework, is the practice of providing high-quality academic and behavioral instruction and interventions to meet students' needs and monitor progress in order to ensure effectiveness of instruction and/or interventions. For SEL, the incumbent will use defined standards and evidenced-based practices and resources, and be responsible for ensuring SEL standards are integrated appropriately into the core content areas. Incumbent will provide technical assistance to schools, on-site coaching for prek-12 sites, and design, deliver and organize professional development in the areas of MTSS and SEL. Incumbent performs other duties as assigned.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists in oversight of District and site level implementation of MTSS and SEL for the Washoe County School District; works in collaboration with District level leaders in building a strong implementation plans; applies a working understanding of national, state, and District MTSS/SEL research, policies and procedures; creates a positive climate of change and consensus; identifies and ameliorates barriers to the process; Incumbent delivers and coordinates training for the implementation of MTSS/SEL, including but not limited to: Data Driven Decision Making, Progress Monitoring, Research-Based Interventions, Special Education Eligibility components, Social and Emotional Learning practices. Provide ongoing training for staff in forms of large and small group, as well as on-site coaching; serves as a liaison to department and stakeholder in the Washoe County School District in regards to MTSS/SEL; Coordinates meetings with campus curriculum cadres, department chairs, and similar teacher teams; Serves as liaison between teachers and administrators and specific community organizations, is current with professional literature regarding MTSS and SEL; plans differentiated training for all MTSS and SEL knowledge levels; coordinates support for schools that may include intervention ideas that meet the needs of all students; provides options for behavior and academic support and planning, site team needs for training, and consultation and support.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
  • Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in School Administration, Counseling, School Psychology, Special or General Education or related field;

  • AND
  • Experience: Five (5) years of experience in a position requiring involvement with Intervention Assistance Team (IAT), SEL programming and/or General and Special Education. Experience in school counseling, psychology and/or teaching is desirable.

  • AND
  • Qualification into the Teacher Leadership Pool is required.

  • Knowledge of: Federal law IDEA; WCSD policies and procedures regarding LD eligibility, applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations; and understanding of developmental norms and the social and individual challenges inherent for persons with a disability; school laws; public relations; laws prompting the MTSS initiative; use of RTI as a process for eligibility under Specific Learning Disability; the MTSS model; educational assessment; progress monitoring tools and essential features of these tools; and implementation of school-wide initiatives. Additionally, a strong instructional background and knowledge of SEL programming are essential.

    Skill at: Communicating and collaborating with groups and individuals; conflict resolution and consensus building; researching best practices; planning, organizing, assigning and coordinating the activities of a professional and support staff; presenting ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing; dealing effectively with people within the community; team building; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and staff supervision and administration.

    Licenses/Certificates : Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Nevada teacher license in a relevant subject area and/or grade level, or a Nevada license with a school counselor endorsement.

    Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year.

    The Washoe County School District pays an additional legislatively-designated amount to the Public Employees Retirement System on behalf of the employee for retirement benefits. No retirement contribution is made by the employee.

    New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.

    Benefits are paid by employees at a prorated percent for those working less than full time.
