TITLE CODE : V17061 GRADE: 05/OPE

REPORTS TO : Sr. Fleet Supervisor

DEFINITION : Plans, coordinates, and supervises the maintenance, repair, storage, and inspection of school buses, trucks, and automobiles. Supervises the operations of the Cockeysville Service Center or satellite bus lots. Assists in administering the fleet management program in the Office of Transportation. Performs other duties as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES :

Supervises automotive maintenance employees at the Cockeysville Service Center and satellite facilities. Plans, assigns, reviews, and coordinates the repair and maintenance of school buses, trucks, and staff automobiles in accordance with established policies and standards.

Establishes and administers a school bus safety inspection program in accordance with state motor vehicle administration regulations and federal motor vehicle safety standards. Coordinates with private contractors and employees to schedule and oversee vehicle inspections and repairs.

Establishes and administers a vehicle emissions testing program. Works closely with vehicle dealers and manufacturers regarding warranty claims, new vehicle acceptance, specifications, repair costs, and related issues.

Keeps current with existing and proposed local, state, and federal laws, regulations, rules, and standards affecting vehicle maintenance, inspection, and specifications. Maintains knowledge of factory specifications, construction methods, and safety standards on all licensed vehicles.

Processes the biweekly payroll for all supervised employees. Prepares employee evaluations and maintains accurate records. Maintains and supervises the maintenance of records on licensed motor vehicles. Prepares reports.

Manages a maintenance budget and approves expenditures. Purchases replacement tools and other supplies as needed for the satellite lots. Evaluates the cost-effectiveness of implementing new procedures, equipment, and technologies.

Develops and implements staff development classes and workshops to provide technical training and skills updating for employees.

Coordinates and manages employees during inclement weather emergencies and other related events. Performs other duties as necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Education, Training and Experience :
Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent, plus six years of experience in motor vehicle repair and maintenance, two years of which were in a supervisory or foreman capacity.

Additional automotive technology education and training is preferred.

Licenses and Certificates :
Possession of a valid class C Maryland driver's license or an equivalent is required.

Possession of a valid commercial Maryland driver's license (CDL) or an equivalent is required. (The license may require certain endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.)

Possession of ASE certification in one or more specialty areas is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of motor vehicle repair and maintenance. Comprehensive knowledge of motor vehicle parts, components, and systems. Comprehensive knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in motor vehicle repair and maintenance.

Skill in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and related equipment. Skill in the diagnosis of motor vehicle malfunctions. Skill in supervising the work of mechanics. Skill in communicating effectively. Skill in maintaining records. Skill in preparing reports.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS :
The duties of this class are generally sedentary. Work requires the operation of an automobile to travel to work sites throughout Baltimore County.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT :
Persons appointed to this class are designated as essential personnel and as such are required to work during emergency events, subject to call to duty, and may be required to work beyond their normally scheduled hours with little or no advanced notice. Persons holding a commercial driver's license (CDL) are subject to alcohol and drug testing in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations and Board of Education policy.

SALARY: Grade 05 on the OPE 12 Month Pay Scale ($66,314-$102,522)

FLSA : Exempt

This position is eligible for the Baltimore County Employees' Retirement System

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • All persons employed by the Baltimore County Public Schools, regular and temporary, are required to be fingerprinted and have a criminal background investigation (State of Maryland, Senate Bill 315, effective October 1, 1986) completed. The fee charged for fingerprinting is $81.00. An identification card will be issued which must be shown prior to employment.
  • Anyone offered employment is required to provide proper identification and documentation of eligibility for employment in the US.
  • If you have military experience you will be asked to provide a copy of DD214.
  • Official transcripts for all higher education must be received prior to contract signing.
  • Some positions will require employees to undergo a physical examination and/or drug testing.
  • All newly hired personnel must attend a Badges and Benefits session.
  • Additional job verification will be required for salary credit.
