Job Description:
The Higginson Elementary seeks an entrepreneurial leader with vision and experience to guide and shape the future of our early learning academy. This individual is ready, willing, and able to lead, inspire and empower our teachers and staff to create and evolve a high-achieving instructional environment that is student-centered, nurturing, innovative and collaborative.

The successful candidate exercises a balanced skill set of managerial effectiveness, instructional rigor, operational efficiency, and community engagement, and has used these skills to nurture and educate early learners to high standards of academic growth, personal integrity, and social responsibility. The candidate can also show success in a pilot or charter school setting, specifically in fundraising, collaboration with community partners, curriculum development, budgeting and scheduling, and other areas where our distinct autonomies create opportunity.

Our School leader must exhibit the following competencies, mindsets, and skills:

Instructional Leadership:
  • Lead the school's vision, mission, and strategic goals to support student's academic success and readiness for elementary education;
  • Possess strong pedagogical skills;
  • Support and supervise the design of standards-based instruction with measurable outcomes;
  • Implement an observation and feedback cycle that ensures continuous improvement in teaching and learning;
  • Analyze student achievement results, identify areas of need and inform instructional goals;
  • Develop and implement a professional development plan to address identified areas of need;
  • Develop collegial environment that supports teacher leadership, collaboration, and growth;
  • Set high expectations and communicate them to a variety of stakeholders.

Management and Operations:
  • Ensure a safe and nurturing environment for students, staff, and families;
  • Serve as a strong school advocate with BPS departments and offices;
  • Strong competencies in financial budget management knowledge and skills;
  • Strategically align people, time and money to drive student achievement;
  • Oversee the recruitment and hiring of diverse, highly-qualified staff;
  • Apply teacher and staff performance management systems in a way that ensures a culture of continuous improvement, support, and accountability;
  • Oversee the operations of the school;
  • Comply with all state and federal laws, policies, and collective bargaining agreements.

Family and Community Engagement:
  • Actively advocate for and engage family and community;
  • Partner with the Governing Board to develop and execute a successful fundraising strategy;
  • Strengthen teacher and staff capacity to cultivate and sustain meaningful partnerships with families of diverse backgrounds and with community members that support student achievement and student well-being.

Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Educational/School Leadership or related fields from an accredited institution required;
  • Experience in early education required;
  • Massachusetts Principal Licensure (by time of appointment) required;
  • Demonstrated experience in English Language Development (ELD), Special Education, and Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) strategies strongly preferred;
  • 2+ years of teaching experience strongly preferred;
  • Knowledge or experience with NAEYC standards and criteria strongly preferred;
  • Experience with autonomous school settings highly preferred;
  • Experience in an urban school setting highly preferred;
  • Experience as a school leader (e.g. in the areas of management/operations, instructional leadership, fundraising, family and community engagement) preferred;
  • Demonstrated experience in building a positive school culture preferred;
  • Fluency in a second language preferred.
