Job Summary
The Social Studies Curriculum Coordinator position develops and maintains the district K–12 Social Studies program with a focus on adult learning and program implementation grounded in the common core state and the national C3 Framework (College, Career & Civic Life). The coordinator assists with the development of adult learning opportunities and the vision of an articulated, innovative 21 st century civics program. The Coordinator recommends and implements changes to assure program integrity, continuous cycles of improvement, relevance, and researched best instructional practices across grade levels K–12.

This certificated position reports to and is evaluated by the Senior Director of Teaching & Learning, or an assigned director in the department of Teaching & Learning. The position resides at the ASD Education Center but involves travel throughout the district. This position requires a valid Alaska teaching or administrative certificate and has a retirement association with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS).

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A valid Alaska teaching certificate by the position start date.Evidence of 5 years successful educational experience teaching, with solid evidence of student success.A master's degree from a regionally or nationally accredited university in the content area of social studies.Evidenced experience with leading and designing adult learning, with a focus on leading and learning through continuous cycles of improvement.Experience working with district-level and school-level teams providing support for instructional improvement and decision-making.

The following are preferred:
  1. Possession of a type B administrative certificate, or willingness to work toward obtaining a type B administrative certificate.Strong understanding of social studies content, state and national standards, researched best-practices in instruction, assessment, collaborative teaming, and data-based decision making.Knowledge and experience in curriculum implementation science.Evidenced leadership skills, strong planning and organizational skills; ability to clearly communicate, manage multiple priorities. Flexibility and willingness to facilitate professional learning afterhours, during the summer, and on weekends.Proven ability to work with diverse populations of learners and demonstrated use of culturally proficient teaching practices.


Essential Job Functions
The following reflects a non-comprehensive list of the job duties for which the successful candidate will be responsible:
  1. Implements the Teaching & Learning Department action plan for social studies curriculum, assessment, and adult professional learning for grades K–12.Leads the Anchorage School District in maintaining and ensuring a consistent rigorous and equitable social studies education experience across all schools based on national best practices and differentiated instruction.Coordinates across departments and divisions within ASD to implement a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) for all students.Maintains an ongoing presence in schools to develop strong professional relationships with teachers and administrators.Coordinates and leads ASD curricular review work and advisory groups for the content area.Facilitates teacher groups to develop curriculum aligned with CCSS; presents new curriculum to staff; designs and presents professional learning opportunities to implement district curriculum.Facilitates teacher groups in the development, implementation, and analysis of common assessments in social studies.Shares proven strategies and researched best practices that close gaps and accelerate learning for all students.Continuously monitors curriculum implementation.Schedules and chairs regular meetings of leadership cadres, department chairs, and other content specific advisory groups.Serves as a point of contact for collaborating with community partnerships, universities, and state and national organizations with a goal of promoting social studies education.Provides assistance responsive to the specific needs of the school and school staff; demonstrates lessons for teachers to observe; works with school-based PLCs and teaching teams to design and implement lesson study cycles.Facilitates professional learning activities in social studies and supports teacher practitioners on facilitating professional learning; applies concepts of adult learning and motivation to meet the needs of staff having different skill levels; facilitates reflection and dialogue among teachers.Collaborates and co-facilitates with other curriculum coordinators to plan, facilitate, and conduct adult professional learning opportunities, as needed.Assists with writing and facilitating grants to further district and department objectives and initiatives.Exhibits knowledge of and keeps abreast of current research findings and recent trends in social studies education.Maintains the confidentiality of school and student records.Performs other duties as assigned.


Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
