The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools is offering an assistant director position to lead, coordinate and further develop our Summer Program. Young people are on campus for three weeks or six, may choose full day programs or a morning and afternoon combination and have an assortment of options within that time frame to experience summer. Unit Challenges: To understand the complexity of operating co curricular programs within four schools (N-12) and as part of a University. To dynamically integrate both strategic and tactical thinking, action and accountability. To proactively engage initiative while also being collaborative and intentional in planning regarding community cultural implications. To balance the needs of the students and families across the Schools in conjunction with schools, mission, goals and resources.

Plans, oversees, and coordinates a wide range of programs, events, and student activities. Develops orientation programming for incoming students and other programming that fosters student communities. Manages the financial operations that support all recognized student organizations.

Responsibilities
The job administers a range of programs, events, and student activities. Assists in the development and implementation of orientation programming for incoming students and other programming that fosters student communities. Performs analysis of financial operations that support all recognized student organizations with moderate guidance from others.

1) Coordinates with the students and staff to develop activities, programs, and initiatives related to student life, and/or community involvement. Develops and implements straightforward programming., 2) Advises, supports, and recommends concepts for programming to leaders of various organizations and programs., 3) Communicates and discusses contract terms with outside vendors. Administers contracts. Maintains organizational records and archives relevant information and program materials. Receives a moderate level of guidance and direction., 4) Markets student activities programming throughout the year. Develops and implements protocols for evaluating the effectiveness of programs., 5) Performs other related work as needed.

Unit-specific Responsibilities
1) Develops action plans and manages work progress to accomplish program goals and objectives.
2) Assesses progress, evaluates effectiveness, and takes appropriate action (incorporating progressive education best practices) for continuous improvement.
3) Informs all planning efforts with ongoing assessment, data gathering and adherence to appropriate best practices in the field of progressive education.
4) Contributes to the implementation and operation of an impactful Extended Day and Summer Lab program.
5) Participates in the hiring, training and development of staff.
6) Monitors daily work of Educators, assigned Summer Lab faculty and staff and others where directed.
7) Coaches staff how to apply best practices in youth development and adhere to the Summer Lab and Extended Day policies and procedures.
8) Facilitates solutions to problems arising to create a unified, supportive team.
9) Assumes accountability for decisions made by administration.
10) Collaborates with internal and external colleagues and stakeholders to align Family Life Programs' objectives.
11) Integrates Extended Day and Summer Lab contributions with the Lab Schools instructional program and its' Faculty and Staff.
12) Establishes partnership activities across departments within The University of Chicago and others external to Lab as directed and under direct supervision.
13) Executes responsibilities and manages resources in alignment with budget directives.

Education, Experience, and Certifications
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications
Education
1) Bachelor's Degree in education, social services, social justice, political policy or a related field, or a combination of education and experience relating to this position. Master's degree and/or professional designation.

Experience
1) 8+ years in education, youth development, social services or organizational development experience, including managing and directing the work of staff performing a variety classroom, training or social services functions.
2) Requires sitting for extended periods of time, standing, visual acumen, manual dexterity, and fingering for working with computer keyboards.
3) Ability to stand for 2 to 4 hours, climb stairs and lift up to 25 lbs.
4) Walking between Historic Campus, Earl Shapiro Hall and other locations on The University of Chicago Campus in all seasons and weather conditions.
