DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The Electronics Technician will perform in-house repair and maintenance work on microcomputers, mini computers, electrical and electronic equipment including the servicing of the state-of-the art equipment. Incumbents must have knowledge of basic electronics, semi-conductors, integrated circuits, digital logic and computer programming. The incumbents act as a trouble-shooter and determines the cause of the problem, repair/parts replacement and whether on-site or in-shop repairs would be made. Immediate supervisions is received from the Head Electronics Technician. Supervision may be exercised over personnel assigned.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Repairs and performs routine maintenance work on micro and mini computers and all components including basic systems, disc-drivers, controllers, monitors, printers and related equipment;

-repairs electrical equipment with solid state electronic components including service to electronic typewriters, word processors, video cassette recorders, closed circuit TV components and numerically controlled vocational machines i.e., drill presses, milling machines, etc.;

-schedules service cleaning and adjusting of various components, i.e., basic computers, monitors, disc-drivers, printers, modems, cassettes;

Maintains service records and provides daily activities reports and periodic summaries;

-may recommend solution of recurring problems;

Investigates and identifies machine malfunctions;

Requests materials, supplies and parts;

-maintains equipment and parts;

Performs related work as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS :
Good knowledge of computer technology methods and use of calculator, meters, oscilloscope, problem solving and graphic technics;

Good knowledge of electrical circuits, i.e., AC & DC circuits, ohms law, resonance and transformers etc.;

Good knowledge of computer electronics including solid state diodes, transistors and integrated circuits, circuit analysis and application;

Working knowledge of computer architecture, memory systems, in-put/out-put devices and logic circuits applications;

Ability to identify computer operational problems and evaluate the need for technical assistance;

Ability to exercise independent judgment;

Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with others;

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Promotional: (A) Continuous and permanent in any city department in the competitive class for one year as an Office Machine Mechanic; OR
  • Continuous and permanent status in any city department in the non-competitive class for two years as an Office Machine Mechanic.


  • Open Competitive:
    ( A) Associates Degree from an accredited college, technical or business institute in Computer Technology or Electronics or Electrical Technology or a closely related field and one year of full-time experience in the maintenance and repair of computer equipment and systems; OR
  • Satisfactory completion of a certified course in Computer Technology, Electronics Technology or a closely related field, as offered by a New York State approved technical training institute and two years of full-time experience in the maintenance and repair of computer equipment and systems;


  • (C) Graduation from High School, GED, or Equivalency Diploma and three years of full time experience in the maintenance and repair of computer equipment and systems;
    OR
    (D) an equivalent combination as defined within the limits of A, B and C.
