The Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) invites applications for a full-time faculty position in the area of data science and education. The appointment will be at the rank of tenure-track Assistant or Associate (untenured) Professor, depending upon experience.

We seek a candidate whose work aims to advance the application of data science to improve teaching, learning, and decision-making processes in education. Such work may include, for example, developing methodologies for analyzing complex data in ways that inform educational policies and practices, using machine learning to model treatment variation in large-scale experiments or observational studies, applying data science techniques to nonstandard educational data sources such as text corpora or event logs from online systems, or synthesizing complex data systems to compare multiple entities such as school districts across states. This list is not exhaustive, but illustrates how competitive candidates may demonstrate their commitment to advancing applications of data science to understand and improve education.

The successful candidate should be able to teach core doctoral and master’s courses as well as advanced elective courses as part of specific program pathways. Given HGSE’s mission, the ability to convey conceptual and practical knowledge beyond one’s own specific expertise is crucial. Candidates should be committed to teaching students from diverse backgrounds and levels of experience, including early-career educators, mid-career professionals, senior leaders, and policymakers.

Successful candidates will have demonstrated potential for rigorous scholarship and a commitment to teaching and mentoring. HGSE faculty at all ranks advise students and participate in institutional governance and service. Candidates should have an earned doctorate in a relevant field, such as education, psychology, computer science, statistics, information science, sociology, or economics, prior to their appointment.
The search committee will begin reviewing applications on October 31, 2019 and will continue until the position is filled. Applicants must submit a CV, a cover letter describing their research agenda, a teaching statement, representative publications, and a list of three colleagues prepared to write reference letters at https://apply.interfolio.com/67878
Applicants invited to visit campus should expect to submit three letters of reference, available syllabi, and teaching evaluations.
