Job Description
JOB GOAL:To provide the best special education and support services for students
with disabilities, students in referral and/or at-risk students in New
Bedford.

PERFOMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Work with staff of the Special Education Department and work with staff to
develop and implement a program that meets the needs of the whole student.
2. Assist in the development of a Response to Intervention (RTI) model for the
district to include both in-school and community supports and interventions, to
address academic, social, emotional and behavioral learning.
3. Assist in the collection of statistical and student data (including assessment data,
grades, benchmark testing, MCAS, at-risk forms) and complete all necessary
reports and submit them to the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services.
4. Support of the team evaluation process and insurance of all state and federal
compliance requirements regarding evaluations and team meetings.
5. Attend Team Meetings as necessary to ensure provisions of quality special
education and/or related services.
6. Ensure that students' Individual Education Programs (IEPs) are being followed
and related services are being provided.
7. Keep informed on all legal requirements governing special education.
8. Work with principals and school-based staff with the proper completion of IEPs.
10. Process IEPs and monitor for completeness and quality of content and accuracy of
procedure.
11. Encourage staff to maintain frequent communication with parents and
community partners.
12. Support the Special Education Parent Advisory Council (PAC)
13. Assist in developing workshops and trainings for staff in order to improve
compliance and improve programming for students with disabilities.
14. Work with the Supervisors of Special Education to ensure the thorough
completion of the MA DESE's Mid-Cycle and Coordinate Program Reviews.
15. Plan and coordinate Extended Year Services (EYS) services for all students who
receive related services during the summer.
16. Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district,
policy and administrative regulation.
19. Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements
1. Certification in proper area and level by the Massachusetts Department of
Elementary & Secondary Education (Special Education Teacher, Guidance
Counselor, School Adjustment Counselor).
2. Master's Degree from an accredited college or university, preferred. Evidence of
specific professional study in the field of special education, including educational
administration and supervision.
3. Three years experience in the area of special education services.
4. Experience designing and implementing new special education programs.
5. Experience working with teachers, service providers, administrators, educational
advocates/ lawyers, families and community agencies, to better integrate services
for students in the New Bedford Public Schools.
6. Understanding of techniques, interventions and instructional strategies for
improving inclusive educational practices and assist in closing the achievement
gap for students with disabilities.
7. Understanding of the SPED Team process and completion of all paperwork
requirements.
8. Excellent communication skills- written, verbal and non-verbal.
9. Excellent interpersonal and social skills with colleagues, district staff, families
and community.
10. Excellent Work Attendance.

Salary and terms of employment are governed by the N.B.E.A., Unit A contract.
