SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under general direction of the Principal and Coordinator of School Counseling, the School Social Worker will assess home, personal and community factors that affect a student's ability to learn. By providing intervention strategies and treatment opportunities for students and their families which include counseling, case management, and crisis intervention, the School Social Worker will strengthen students' learning opportunities, achievements and socio-emotional functioning, and ensure that children and their families are provided services within the context of multicultural understanding and sensitivities that enhance the families' support of the children's learning experiences. In alignment with other District programs such as Children in Transition, Alternative Placement, and Drop-Out Prevention, the School Social Worker will further encourage success among low achieving at-risk students.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Acts as mandated reporter of child abuse; designs and implements behavior management programs for individual families; provides referral resources for families; serves as liaison between students, homes, family services, child guidance clinics, courts, protective services, doctors, and other contacts to help children who face problems such as disabilities, abuse, or poverty; advises administrators, counselors, and staff on critical issues impacting student achievement; participates in school counselor training and programs, contributes to the ongoing enrichment of the school through participation in program development and activities designed to build upon staff competencies; provides individualized direct services to remove barriers that impede academic, social, and emotional success; assists students and parents with identifying and obtaining access to community services and resources; assists students in obtaining access to medical, psychiatric, and other tests and examinations that may disclose causes of difficulties and indicate remedial measure; participates in crisis intervention teams; assists students and/or parents with obtaining low-cost child care services when the lack of such care interferes with the attendance of high school students; provides casework services to students who have problems adjusting; facilitates individual and group support sessions with student; consults with teachers, administrators, and parents regarding classroom behavior, policies, and procedures affecting student performance; responds to suicidal statements made by students; provides direct and indirect services to students and families to address any issue that interferes with the educational process using goal-oriented casework, group work, and community organizational skills; administers procedures set forth in the Nevada Attendance Laws and Washoe County District Attendance Policy; and maintains a record system of information obtained through individual contacts and makes necessary information available to staff to facilitate understanding of the individual student.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills are qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

Education: Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in school social work.

AND

Experience: Three (3) years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) school social work experience OR three (3) years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) experience in social work with children is desirable.

Knowledge of: Social work ethics and modalities; K-12 at-risk students and their families; theories of human behavior and development; multidisciplinary activities; characteristics of the pupil population; public education legislation, case law, and due process; knowledge and experience in behavior management; family systems theory and techniques; parent education; procedures for identifying students who may need social services; student assessment methods and procedures, intervention, and direct service activities, including counseling with students and parents, coordination of programs and services through home-school-community liaison activities; consultation methods; program development systems and strategies; the particular educational requirements of students with special needs; the philosophy and principles associated with career development and occupations education.

Skill at: Exceptional interpersonal skills; ; ability to work autonomously and responsibly; program development and case management; writing, evaluating, and coordinating school social work programs and services; communicating effectively with district education personnel including principals and teachers, as well as students, parents and employees of community service agencies; utilizing various objective measures including measures of adaptive behavior, self-esteem, social skills, attitudes, emotional health, and interests.

Licenses/Certificates: Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid Nevada Education License in School Social Work; possession of or the ability to obtain a valid Nevada driver's license with a driving record acceptable to the District.

Special Considerations: Must be willing and able to work flexible scheduling requiring evening and weekend hours.

Additional Job Information :
The Washoe County School District pays an additional legislatively-designated amount to the Public Employees Retirement System on behalf of the employee for retirement benefits. No retirement contribution is made by the employee.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.

Please be advised there is a 90-day waiting period for insurance benefits. Benefits are paid by employees at a prorated percent for those working less than full time.
