Purpose

The Springfield, Missouri Public School District is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Paraprofessional.

The Springfield School District is Missouri's largest public school district and has built a reputation of academic excellence based on the outstanding performance of our students and schools. About 25,000 students attend 36 elementary schools, an intermediate school, 9 middle schools, 5 high schools and a variety of alternative education and choice programs.

The Paraprofessional provides support to the instructional program within assigned classroom with specific responsibility for working with individual and/or small groups of students; and providing clerical support to teacher/s and staff.

Essential FunctionsAdapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom

Administers classroom assignments, tests, homework assignments, make-up work, for the purpose of supporting teachers in the instructional process.

Assists students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments (e.g. read stories, listen to students read, providing writing assistance, reinforce English lessons, provide spelling practice, facilitate activities, computer learning programs, ) for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching academic goals and grade level.

Attends meetings and in-service presentations for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job

Communicates with teachers and/or parents for the purpose of assisting in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP

Implements interventions, under the supervision of assigned teacher, for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning

Maintains manual and electronic files and records for the purpose of providing written reference and/or meeting mandated

Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunchroom, bus loading/unloading, ) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.

Performs general clerical functions (e.g. copying, collating, filing, recording, ) for the purpose of supporting the instructional program.

Reports health and safety issues to instructional personnel, administrative personnel and/or appropriate agencies (e.g. fights, suspected child or substance abuse, inappropriate social behaviors, ) for the purpose of maintaining students' personal safety, a positive learning environment and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.

Responds to emergency situations (e.g. injured student, fights, ) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.

Supports classroom teachers and other school personnel for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of curriculum and teaching

Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements (Minimum Qualifications)Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific Knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: concepts of grammar and punctuation; stages of child development and learning styles; age appropriate activities; and methods of instruction.

Skills are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.

Ability is required to schedule activities, meetings and/or events; gather, collate and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Employee Punctuality and Appearance

In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.

Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee's supervisor or building administrator.

All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Springfield School District and is appropriate for their position.

Terms of Employment

The terms of employment will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment in a Missouri public school and Board of Education policy, as those laws and policies may change from time to time. If your position is represented by Collective Bargaining representative, then your employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement between SPS and that Collective Bargaining representative.

EducationMinimum of sixty (60) college hours, required (*See Certificates and Licenses for additional information.)

EquivalencyExceptional job related experience may be considered in lieu of experience requirements listed.

Miscellaneous RequirementsBackground clearance, the results of which must be satisfactory to the District, required

Certificates and LicensesAbility to obtain and maintain substitute certificate, or current teaching certificate is required

Ability to complete training and professional development requirements set by DESE, Springfield Public Schools, and the Special Services department for paraprofessionals

Ability to obtain and maintain physical intervention training (provided by the district)
