Job Summary
The Technician, Bus Dispatcher assists in the planning of bus routes, training of bus drivers, and assigning routes. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A high school diploma or equivalent.Minimum of one year experience driving a school bus in Alaska.Knowledge of safe driving practices and safety procedures.Knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to student transportation.Ability to train, schedule, and evaluate the work of bus drivers and attendants.Possession of a valid commercial driver's license with passenger, air brake, and school bus endorsements.A clean driving record.Ability to keep accurate records and prepare reports.Ability to establish and maintain productive relationships with principals, other Anchorage School District employees, the general public, and others.

The following is preferred:
  1. Knowledge and understanding of computers and related equipment.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Assists in planning and maintaining of regular and special education bus routes and schedules.Organizes emergency routing by coordinating with public safety officers, transportation contractors, civil defense, and other agencies.Orients, instructs and gives on-the-job training to bus drivers and special education bus attendants as required by ASD policy and Alaska State Department of Education standards.Prepares work schedules and assignments and arranges for substitute drivers and attendants.Monitors the performance of school bus drivers and attendance to insure compliance with ASD policies and applicable laws.Receives and processes inquiries from parents and principals regarding student transportation, discipline on the buses, and transportation routing.Monitors maintenance needs of buses and refers equipment for repair.Maintains records and makes reports as required.Assists supervisor of Transportation and safety officers in providing pre-service and in-service training.

Physical/Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to communicate by oral and written means in an appropriate business manner and have cognitive skills to understand instructions, readily recall facts and details, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
