The Boston Public Schools is seeking an Executive Director (ED) of Development and Partnerships to build upon and strengthen this work. This opportunity is ideal for accomplished organizational leaders and advancement experts who are craving a connection between their leadership talents and community impact.

The Executive Director will set the vision and strategy for the district's development and partnership efforts. The ED will inspire and lead a talented team of professionals working to ensure that the department's work is well-aligned with the mission and strategic goals of the organization. The successful candidate will work with the Advancement and Partnerships team to reimagine and build on the process of connecting with potential donors and partners, identifying and implementing a variety of resource generation strategies that will support district and school needs into the future.

The ED will lead all fundraising efforts, including foundation, state and federal funding opportunities, and corporate and individual giving. Additionally, the position will expand and strengthen the district's effort to increase and strengthen equitable access to high-quality school-based opportunities provided by community partners.

Responsibilities:
Strategic Planning
  • Work with the Superintendent's Executive Cabinet and Chief Engagement Officer to develop and set aligned, multi-year development and partnership goals, targets and plans
  • Identify and share with district leadership trends and themes around school and district needs and opportunities to strategically address them through fundraising or partnerships
  • Develop a long-term strategy for alumni engagement including the potential to build a pipeline of alumni as recruiters and funders

External Partner Cultivation and Management, and Communications
  • Share "Face of the Agency" responsibilities with district leadership, attending corporate, community, partner and donor events as the subject-matter-expert for the mission and strategies of BPS
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with corporate and philanthropic partners on behalf of departments, and work with recipient departments to assess progress towards outcomes
  • Oversee department activities to identify, maintain and diversify philanthropic giving and partnership opportunities, and assess and evaluate impact and outcomes
  • Optimize the matching of partnership opportunities and philanthropic giving with school and district needs
  • Identify, design and create stewardship and partnership opportunities and campaigns across all stakeholder groups
  • Work collaboratively with the communications team to design and launch a multi-media campaign to raise district visibility and increase goodwill resulting in increased external investment
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure sound fiscal management of philanthropic resources

Policy and Procedure Development
  • Create and implement district development and partnership expectations, procedures, policies and parameters for school and department fundraising, and partner and donor cultivation
  • Ensure the equitable distribution of external resources, including grant funding, in-kind donations, partnerships, volunteers, and experiences

Operations and Talent Management
  • Oversee the department budget including oversight of targeted funds
  • Develop and adhere to the annual calendar of fundraising, volunteer, partnership and alumni events and initiatives
  • Provide effective supervision for all direct reports, including goal-setting, ongoing supervision, coaching, professional development and annual performance evaluations
  • Serve as the department signatory to BEDF and serve as the district representative on the BEDF Board of Directors
  • Oversee the identification and/or integration data management systems
  • Present grants and in-kind donations to the Boston School Committee
  • Oversee the writing of quarterly and annual reports

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications - Required:
  • Master's degree or equivalent experience
  • 7+ years of development/fundraising experience
  • Experience managing fundraising campaigns and a proven track record in major gift cultivation and solicitation, raising at least $2M annually
  • A record of accomplishment for meeting or exceeding revenue generation or fundraising goals
  • Demonstrated success in writing and managing complex national and federal grants
  • Demonstrated comfort level meeting with agency executives, business executives and political figures
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, including an ability to sell the organization to an external audience
  • Strategic planning ability, organization, and discipline - the ability to chart a course of action, establish measurable deliverables, and stay the course
  • Experience managing complex projects to a successful conclusion leveraging and developing the talent of team members under management
  • An "outcome orientation" with the ability to effectively manage multiple responsibilities while maintaining the big picture as it relates to the mission of the organization
  • Knowledge of the Boston community, including partners, influential community members and the philanthropic landscape
  • Strong data analysis and program evaluation skills
  • Passion for and commitment to public education and to creating opportunity for all students
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - a candidate must have such authorization by his or her first day of employment

Qualifications - Preferred:
  • Bilingual or multilingual
  • Proficiency in Salesforce
  • 10+ years of development/fundraising experience
TERMS: Managerial, Tier E. City of Boston Residency Required. Flexible hours and occasional weekend and evening work are required
