Position Summary:
Stimulate and actively facilitate the development of students in all areas - personal, social, behavioral, cognitive, career, moral-ethical and to promote the integration of several components into an individual lifestyle.

Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Provides, according to each student's individualized education plan, individual and/or group counseling services to students on assigned caseload
  • Assess students, both informally and formally, to determine their therapeutic needs
  • Completes planning and related documentation as required
  • Assists in the development and execution of the School wide Character Education initiatives
  • Provides consultation to teachers who need assistance incorporating developmental concepts into academic content areas
  • Collaborates with special education teachers to plan and initiate activities to promote learning
  • Provides parent support to include individual conferences and group meetings with parents centered on the academic and personal growth of their children. This also includes the referral of students and parents to appropriate specialists
  • Serves as a reference and resource on student and school issues for administration
  • Maintains a close working relationship with referrals and referral sources
  • Responds calmly and objectively in situations involving students with extreme/sustained behaviors
  • Utilizes appropriate techniques of behavior management and crisis interventions as indicated in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention guidelines; implements strategies to address escalating behaviors, i.e. time-out, discussion, conflict resolution
  • Serves as a role model for students, represent appropriate behavior, anger management, and problem-solving skills
  • Assists administration with upholding and enforcing School rules, policies, and procedures
  • Participates in continuous professional growth and development related to field of counseling
  • Ensures safety of student, self and others by supporting and following emergency procedures, i.e. code red; fire drills
  • Remain after normal school hours to complete professional duties such as assessments, parent contact and staffings, as needed
  • Meets accepted standards of professional behavior, including commitment to punctuality and attendance
  • Attends all mandatory in-service training and regularly attends meetings at the request of the building principal
  • Adheres to no smoking and/or tobacco use policy in all School buildings, School grounds and in School vehicles
  • All other duties as assigned
  • Follow ethical standards of the profession, other official policy statements pertaining to counseling, and relevant statutes established by federal, state and local governments

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • New York State School Counselor certification
  • Knowledge of multi-cultural development
  • Complete Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training and utilize skills in a School environment
  • Knowledge of counseling theories and skills, group dynamics, and small group processes
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Maintain discipline and control disruptive student behavior
  • Operate a computer to perform work, maintain records and prepare reports
  • Valid driver license preferred

Physical Requirements
  • Standing, walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, occasional lifting and/or moving more than 25 pounds
  • Most work is indoors except when supervising students on field trips or outdoors on School grounds
  • Physical activity requiring routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items
  • Moderate physical activity with the ability to initiate or participate in physical interventions when necessary
