BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or general education diploma (GED) and eight years of law enforcement experience is required;
  • Ability to pass drug screening, polygraph, physical examination, and mental health evaluation are required;
  • Knowledge of applicable state and local juvenile laws and school regulations;
  • Ability to respond to an active shooter event and use deadly force if necessary;
  • Ability to wear a ballistic vest while on duty;
  • Ability to obtain information through interviews and/or observation to draw logical conclusions;
  • Ability to deal courteously and fairly with the public, school staff, and students;
  • Ability to use effective verbal de-escalation techniques prior to physical intervention;
  • Ability to analyze situations and take quick, effective, and reasonable course of action;
  • Ability to remember names, faces, and details of incidents;
  • Ability to exercise good judgment; and
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.


STATE REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess a valid driver's license;
  • Meet all requirements contained in Virginia Code § 22.1-280.2:1, "Employment of school security officers:"
    • Law enforcement officers must have retired or resigned in good standing;
    • Retired officers must have retired within ten years of being hired for this position; and
    • Officers must meet all other training requirements as noted in this Virginia Code section.
  • Must have or obtain certification to the prescribed physical and verbal intervention techniques, e.g., Handle with Care certification; and
  • Must have or obtain, within first 60 days of hire, Virginia School Security Officers (VASSO) certification, provided by Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS).

BASIC FUNCTION/NATURE OF WORK:

This position is responsible for providing safety and security services at various elementary schools. The position investigates and detects criminal/disruptive activity and assists in maintaining proper decorum in the elementary schools. Employee is expected to maintain ability to react and respond to school emergencies and assist in intervention techniques.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/ILLUSTRATIVE EX OF WORK:


  • Works collaboratively with all stakeholders in Providing A World-Class Education .

  • Builds and establishes meaningful rapport with staff, students, and the community.

  • Reviews incidents of a disruptive or criminal nature on school property, attempts to identify those involved by interviewing complainants and/or witnesses, and forwarding Incident Reports to the principal and the Office of Risk Management and Security Services.

  • Carries an assigned firearm and responds to potential criminal acts that may require the use of deadly force which may put the employee at risk of death or serious injury.

  • Follows PWC Police Department's General Orders on the use of deadly force.

  • Teaches safety and security related curriculum to staff, students, and community, as assigned. (e.g., crisis management, VA Rules curriculum, Stranger Danger Awareness program, etc.)

  • Attends professional development and assigned training exercises, as assigned.

  • Completes other duties as assigned.



  • Works with school administration to complete required School Vulnerability Assessments, as required by the Virginia Center for School and Campus Safety.

  • Investigates accidents and/or injuries and prepares correspondence to principal and Office of Risk Management and Security Services.

  • Assists in the preparation of correspondence and the collection of restitution for property damage from responsible party.

  • Conducts and documents patrol of school and parking facilities to establish high visibility, deter crime, and ensure students and teachers have a safe environment.

  • Maintains an internal presence in the school hallways, cafeteria, gymnasium, and other common areas.

  • Assists the Office of Risk Management and Security Services, PWC Police Department, and Social Services with criminal investigations, as required.

  • Maintains records and prepares Incident Reports, juvenile arbitration reports, and charging documents for legal proceedings and expulsion hearings, as necessary.

  • Appears as witness or complainant to court proceedings.

  • Participates in elementary schools' threat assessment process, as required by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).

  • Inspects building facilities for safety and fire hazards, e.g., faulty locks, broken windows, inadequate lighting, etc.

  • Assists with traffic control during arrival and dismissal times.

  • Reviews closed-circuit television (CCTV) history, as needed.

  • Provide a visible security presence during investigations, meetings, terminations as requested by senior staff.

  • Works flexible hours to provide security coverage for school events, as requested.



SALARY:
$46,384/year ($32.90/hour)
